I just got approved by my insurance to have the lap band surgery done. My surgeon is supposed to be back in the office next month, so I am likely to be scheduled sometime then (some birthday present, eh? ). I did have a Roux-n-Y gastric bypass attempt in September 2005, but the procedure couldn't be completed after they opened me up and found a rare condition of my intestines being backwards--even my appendix was on the opposite side of where it should have been. That is when I got referred for the lap band and had to do the tests all over again. Oh well.

Congrats on your great success! Since loosing 120 are you left with a lot of saggy skin like you see on TV or is that just not a problem? Again weel done, keep up the good work.

My sister had gastric bypass about 3 years ago. She lost almost 100 lbs during her first year and has managed to keep it off since then. She can barely eat a cup full of food at any one meal and even then she must eat it very slowly. I suppose if she exercised, she might be in trouble with burning too many calories?

Is the gastric bypass less expensive than the newer laprascopic band technique?

Anyway, congrats and best wishes Ted!

I'm not sure, I guess depending on where you live. I know I was quoted, with hospital costs, that mine will be around the $30,000-40,000 range. This is still a fairly new procedure in the US; lap banding was just approved by the FDA in 2003. It was a common procedure in Europe and Australia, with great success, for many years before then.

I had the gastric bypass done in Aug. and it ran about 45K. If I had opted for the lap Band procedure, it would've been close to 22K. Unfortunately, my pressure went from prescribed at 10cm on CPAP to 12cm. I am trying to convince my sleep doc to prescribe an APAP for me as I will continue to lose weight and pressures will continue to vary. Does anyone have advice on a good argument in favor of APAP for me? I see the doc in 2 hours.... ..Sorry for short notice, they just called me with a cancellation.
Thanks!

Mary

I think you just made your case. I would add that the APAP will minimize you having to go to the lab for frequent titrations studies and save you lots of $$$.

Rooster,

That's "Guest" posting through AOL. The list is (apparently) everybody that uses AOL.

Thanks, Den, for clearing that up. I guess on the days we forgot to or couldn't sign in, for some weird reason, they are all logged into the term "Guest" without any further name clarification. Either that, or we'll all the same person under many aliases.

Where I'm at, the lap band is much cheaper. My daughter had a lap band put in last July and has lost 60 pounds so far. I certainly would have it done if I had insurance. The lap band is reversible if for some reason in the future you might need to drastically increase your calorie intake such as a major illness or injury. She had the lap band done one morning and went home the next day and went back to work a day later. It was a little rough going back to work so soon but she had to. She can only eat about 3/4 of a cup of food at a time and only certain foods at that. So far, her blood pressure is returned to normal levels and her sleep apnea is much, much better. There are some things that she has had to deal with such as the intense desire to overeat and getting in enough nutrition (mainly protein) and constipation. She has to be very careful to drink a lot of water and she can only take little swallows at a time so it takes most of a day to get in the water she needs and then she has to take in the proper amount of protein or her hair starts falling out. You can really see now that she's losing weight. I'm really happy for her. She's been on more diets than I can count and the weight always comes back after a few months (she's just like me) and she is 29 so I hope this will end her weight problems.

congratulations, i am so jealous!!! i do know that the weight loss is not as easy as it sounds and that you really need to watch your food types and amounts. people think its an easy way out for weight loss but its not. i wish you continued success and good health. happy new year! pat
