8 years later they say I DO have sleep apnea

Post by SleepyonMagnoliaSt » Thu Aug 05, 2021 12:46 am

So I joined in 2013 after having weird test results and then a crazy run around of my results.

My child does have sleep apnea and has been on CPAP since 2013.

Then I had two further studied that were home studies and nothing because I didn't sleep (they'd start the study at 9 pm and run to 4 am) . Last month I had a home study that 'I' started when I was going to bed. And I slept hard. I have an ahi of 16. So.....I was right and I feel vindicated.

I knew something was up but never could get anyone to do a study when I was sleeping well on my own time

Yes, a sleep study is no use if you're not asleep! I'm glad you finally have a proper diagnosis. What will the next steps be for you?

I'm curious...

If the sleep study had been done in a lab...would the AHI possibly be higher than 16.

I think it would probably be double if not triple the number higher.

Ah well, as long as the OP can get justification to get a CPAP machine and be able to use the machine to get their AHI down below 1...that's all that matters.

I just don't have full faith in the "at home" sleep studies though...

I leave it up to you to figure it out!

Good luck with that.
Home tests can be quite effective, less expensive, and it's easier to sleep at home.
They may eventually replace many lab studies.
Not everyone has access to what others take for granted,
though they deserve appropriate care nonetheless.

It's like anything else...going to depend on the type/quality of the home study and the amount of sleep someone actually gets when they are all wired up.
But then I had an in lab sleep study (and a separate titration study) and they had their limitations as well.
Nothing is ever perfect.

A good type 2 home sleep study where someone can actually sleep in their own bed and get some real sleep is actually going to probably offer more insight than an in lab study would.
Needs to be a type 2 though and not someone just slapping a pulse ox on the finger and cannula in the nose and that's it.
