Philips Respironics Recall

Post by no1texan » Wed Jun 30, 2021 4:33 pm

Since Philips Respironics says on their website not to use your CPAP if it is being recalled, which my Dream Station is being recalled, what are users of the recall machines doing in place, i.e., not much choice but go without a CPAP?

I assume you were using yours up until you knew of the recall............?

Personally, if I didn't have a backup machine (and I would NOT be without one), I would keep using mine until someone informed me what I was supposed to do. A few more nights using it ain't gonna kill you any deader than you already are!

I would keep using mine until I could find a different machine. The dangers for me of sleeping without CPAP for even a few nights are very severe. The danger from inhaling tiny amounts of VOC is minor in comparison. How long have you already been inhaling them? Will some more months make that much difference?

Scour Craigslist for used ResMed models.

I have been using my Dream Station until I learned about the recall. Then I registered on the Philips Respironics website and was informed on that website that my CPAP was in the recall. I was given a confirmation number but have not heard since. The first Philips website said to continue using your CPAP. Then the website changed to the following: For patients using BiLevel PAP and CPAP devices:

Discontinue use of your device and work with your physician or Durable Medical Equipment (DME) provider to determine the most appropriate options for continued treatment. https://www.usa.philips.com/healthcare/ ... src-update

I have an appointment with my CPAP doctor, but not sure what he can do. I am retired on fixed income, primary insurance is Medicare. Medicare will not do anything while Philips the provider is liable.

Thanks for your comments.

Thanks for the idea of checking craigslist. Surprised to find one source - in Houston, Tx - the page is very detailed, linked to a website, https://www.theperfectcpap.com/. Still a bit unsure buying from a source that is not "established?" medical source. Our provider is Monitor Medical currently.

Found this interesting article written by 2 doctors:
What Happens If I Don't Use CPAP One Night?

https://www.verywellhealth.com/what-hap ... ly%20small.

Many people worry that not using CPAP for one night may put their health at risk. The risk of sudden death, stroke, or heart arrhythmia due to sleep apnea that occurs during one night of failed use is likely vanishingly small. Instead, sleep apnea is a long-term risk factor for these medical consequences. It is a condition that is usually present for years. Much like the fact that one cigarette doesn’t necessarily kill you, but smoking for 30 years just might, it’s the cumulative exposure to the adverse effects of sleep apnea that harm health. Struggling to breathe, night after night can lead to these problems.

It can still happen with skipping ONE night.........

If I were in the same position, I would continue sleeping with my cpap,
I remember the unbearable morning headaches,
the multiple panicked wake-ups, and feeling like crap all day, every day.
I am fairly certain I would not survive much more of the same.
This frog will not crawl into a hole and give up . . .
Luckily I have my Resmed--and do not own stock in Respironics.
Life is good.

As for residual effect, I already know from a past power outage,
that skipping one night indeed can have significant effects.
Mainly, I felt like a miserable, grumpy zombie all the next day.
This is why the last time the power went off,
I stayed up until the power came back on.
It was totally WORTH IT.
Let Respironics compensate those whom they have wronged.
Willingly, or not.

I decided to buy a replacement unit and send the bill to Medicare. They probably won't pay it since my DreamStation1 is only 3 1/2 years old, but then I appeal. It will be fun sending in appeals forever. In the mean time I have a new unit, yes I bought a DreamStation 2 while my DME had a few, and whatever happens with the recall I can just sit back and watch the excitement. I hope everyone that this touches comes out all right. We are in this together.

Yes I am aware that Oscar can't real DS2 files, but I just didn't want to change brands.

Leave it to a code breaker or a leaker (bless them).
The paywall data encryption may become a moot point
It may even be in violation of patients' access to their own data.
The courts may get to bat that around,
if the hackers don't beat them to it.

IF you continue to use your machine I would use a AB filter at the end of the hose to catch any small particles that may come your way. https://www.cpap.com/plp/bacteria-cpap-filters/ZT0yOTc

I know two in our community who died from missing one night without CPAP. Both forgot to pack their CPAPs on trips and came home in boxes.

I take this exactly the opposite of what the writers intended. "Much like the fact that breathing tiny amount of foam VOCs doesn't necessarily kill you, but breathing them for 30 years might."

I have moderate sleep apnea. I started therapy 8 months ago. I stopped using my device 10 days ago, which is when I found out it was being recalled. I purchased a used one on Craigslist. The recall was like a blessing in disguise. I say that because I didn't have a backup machine and now I do.

Since I've been using DS for just a week or so, I didn't want to risk further and decided to turn it back.

I bought mine Dreamstation (and overpaid for it), a little less than a month ago, and currently the distributor guy is avoiding me for 10 days already because I informed him I wanted to bring him the machine back and that I want my money back... But tomorrow I'll bring him the machine back no matter his intentions. He called few days ago, he said he understood my concerns but he was "afraid" for my health if I stop the treatment.

Meanwhile I bought Airsense 10 as well and it's miles better, I react a lot better to it. To be honest, I'd buy Resmed right away, but I couldn't find the distributor, and our country has some stupid law so I couldn't order it from abroad either...

If you can afford get the Resmed, what's $1000 if so, comparing to your health... I live in a very poor country, our average monthly wage is around $400-500 and I've just cashed out close to $3000 for both DS and Resmeds plus masks...

Cheers
