CPAP Problems... or my imagination???

Post by Kapitan » Sun May 16, 2021 5:45 pm

Hi gang....

First post here and looking forward to getting some good intel from reading your opinions and suggestions on the world of CPAP use.

I’ve been using my ResMed S10 for about 21,000 hours now and I’m wondering if it’s time to get a new one due to the following:

* The past month or two, it feels to me as if the pressure coming into my Swift FX nose pillows has reduced without changing the settings.... almost like there is some type restriction, and it feels like I’m having to forcefully inhale to get the amount of air pressure I need for it to feel “natural” unless I tweak up the pressure about 2-3 units. I’ve not felt this issue ever before in the years I’ve been using a CPAP but its bugging me and causing me to adjust the pressure both up and down almost each night if not several times per night, and I’m not getting the good sleep I had been for years up until now.

FYI: I’ve bought new tubing both heated and non heated, new nose pillows, clean the tubes and pillows regularly... well, ok... almost regularly :-)

So.... my question here would be: If a CPAP machine is “on it’s last leg”, would this possibly be an indicator? Anyone have any similar experience like mine with their machine??? Open to all thoughts, opinions and suggestions!

Thanks

Pat

There's no such thing as a "s10", there are many very different machines in the Air10 line, which one do you have?

Since perception is very unreliable, the only way to really tell if the machine isn't giving the pressure it should be is to hook a manometer up to it. You can use an oxygen adapter and make one out of some tubing and water and a metric ruler, or you can buy a digital one on ebay for around $30 bucks.

Looking at the mask pressure trace in oscar will tell you what the machine *thinks* the pressure is at any particular instant during the night.

I shortened it to S10 but it’s the Air Sense 10.

Kapatin,
Welcome to the forum. Although NOT the inviting, compassionate bunch here! But folks like LSAT et al. Are quite helpful - look at how many posts and threads they've uploaded. However, forums like these, are indeed much like other forums, social media, etc. Words are taken out of context. And yeah... we all should proof read out comments, take deep breathes and decide if indeed our thoughts are appropriate to post. Wars have started because someone forgot a comma - or misspelled a word - or in your case did not provide adequate information. The folks like LSAT are doing this for free. And you my friend, are here to seek FREE advice. Kaptain; The next time you post, this forum or others, - and are seeking for help (in this case technical help) be sure to include as much information as possible to the thread. Need a template? Checkout my post on FLOW LIMIT. Also, Pugsy has posted a thread for newbies, I suggest you read up on that. Look, you did the noteworthy task posting a thread for help. And of all CPAP groups FB and the likes (I've been to them all) this appears to be the most helpful, most consistent, and most aggressive when it come interpreting information. Satisfy the folks that are helping you for FREE, with the information and details they so desire and need to provide you with FREE help and advice. My opinion and personal advice, if you can't take ridicule and a few finger jabs - then forums aren't for you. "No matter how indulging the rose, be careful the thorns!"

Get a new machine. Assuming you have insurance and use a local DME, when you go to pick it up, take the old one and have them check the pressure. Any DME worth anything will have a manometer handy.

In any case, keep your old machine as a backup in case the new one fails. Even if it is not pumping correctly, it may get you through a night until you can get the newer one repaired or replace.

Whatever your old machine is/was, you want at least an autoset or an autoset "for her".
Avoid the plain "CPAP" at all costs.
All the bells/whistles have been left off. For Oscar, you get squat.
I got an Airsense 10 for the second time. Great machine!
I prefer to let others be in the "beta" group, paying full price to help iron out the bugs in new models.
