Is mask leak insignificant? (In my case)

Post by chaswalters » Fri May 14, 2021 11:12 am

I was using a Resmed F-20 and had no leaks. It created a sore on the bridge of my nose. I had few leaks with that cushion. I switched to the memory foam cushion. It is more comfortable, my AHI's seem ok, but it leaks quite a bit more than the other. My question I suppose is - Do the leaks matter that much if AHI's are not rising?

Your graphs are too tiny to really evaluate well.

Don't need all those tiny graphs...need to see the more important graphs in better detail.....bigger image
See this for graph formatting examples.

You don't spend a lot of time in large leak and the AHI during any large leak is really the only part we worry about. Is the machine missing some sort of apnea event because due to the leak it can't sense things accurately????? We don't know but usually when that starts to happen we see some UAs flagged which are unclassified apneas. The machine knows something is going on but doesn't know what to call them because the leak is so big it can't do a good job.

Even if it had missed an event here and there during the large leak...probably wouldn't have greatly changed the AHI since the bulk of the night there wasn't a leak issue.

If this were my report and I was sleeping great and feeling great during the day then I would probably shrug my shoulders and move on.
Now if leaks woke me up and/or I felt like crap during the day then I would probably work on leak management a bit so that I could sleep better and feel better.

Is this the correct way?

yes.

as to the leaks, are they keeping you awake? or are they waking you up?
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

At times they wake me. Last night was the final straw, because it woke me at 2:30 and I couldn't get to back to sleep until 5am. That never happened with the other. I'll go back the the silicone cushion and figure a way to protect the bridge of my nose.

anything that interferes with sleep isn't good, of course. so yeah you may want to go back to the other.

may i suggest moleskin or maybe just a bit of fabric for protection?

also there is padacheek.com. haven't used them myself, but others recommend them.

good luck!
