Problem with DreamWear FFM

Post by ChicagoGranny » Wed May 12, 2021 12:02 pm

I really like most of the features of the DreamWear FFM. However, the part of the silicone that lies between the upper lip and nose has an edge that cuts into the nose. After three or four nights of use, that edge has rubbed a painful cut on my columella.

This part of the Amara View FFM curves in where it meets the columella. Thus, it does not cut.

I have to use the Amara View FFM at night and save the DreamWear FFM for the occasional short afternoon nap. I never found a good solution to allow the DreamWear to be used consistently.

Have you looked at the ResMed F30?

They pretty much solved the "cuts" problem with the extra strip. But, it cradles too far up the outside of the nose for my comfort.

Thanks for the recommendation.

have you considered a liner? or maybe just a bit of old cloth for that area?
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

It's right up against the nostril openings. I'm afraid the least shift would block the nostrils.

No solution here, but for what it's worth, I too found the Dreamwear FFM (large cushion size) to be very comfortable and generally unobtrusive, but also felt that sharp edge under my nose. I felt like I had to tighten the straps pretty securely to prevent leaks in that area, and thought that might be the reason. I was going to try a liner - even homemade, just a small strip of cloth - or a piece of softish tape on my upper lip area. But then I tried the Airfit F30i (medium cushion) and found the silicone against the sides of my nose to be soft enough to get used to very quickly, with the additional advantage of no leaks at all due to that more curved shape. (They do also have a "small wide" size cushion that has a shallower curve that doesn't go as high up the sides of the nose.) I still have my Dreamwear as a backup - it spoiled me with the top-hose design and minimal facial covering. Good luck!

There is a possible solution, though I don't know how comfortable it would be.

Instead of just laying a small strip of cloth on top of the silicone strip, loop the cloth around the silicone strip.

I had a DreamWear mask as my first mask my (now fired) DME issued me and I felt like it had that sort of sharp edge too.

Switched to a ResMed F30i initially which is the exact type as the DreamWear and then to the F30 which is like the Amara View and I do NOT feel like the ResMed silicone has these “edges” at all like the Philips does.

Might be worth a try? CPAP.com will let you try one out for 30 days and return if it doesn’t work for you.

Maybe a tiny bit of moleskin tucked around the offending area of the silicone???

What size cushion are you using? I think the larger sizes of the DreamWear full face cushion have more curvature in that area. Maybe try a larger size if you think you can?
