Almost Drowned in my Sleep!

Post by chaswalters » Mon May 03, 2021 7:28 am

Ok, maybe I am being dramatic. After a full week on this machine I decided to give the whole thing a proper cleaning. I is a Resmed Air 10 Auto, with a F-20 full mask. I hung the hose for about 10 hours before using the machine. Everything was fine until about 2:30 am. The piece where the mask and hose attach became very noisy and it was spitting water at me. I could feel it hitting my face. I actually didn't notice. My wife woke me up from the noise of the swivel piece on the mask. My humidity level is set to 7, I have a heated hose. The 3 bif leaks are where I disconnected the hose from the mask to blow out water. After that it would stop doing it.
Here is a pic of mask and Oscar for the night and a pic of my mask this morning.

Other than the cleaning, everything was the same as it had been for the first week.

I have a heated hose.
What temperature is it set to?

What temperature is your ambient household temp?

House temp is about 68, hose temp is 81.

Is it possible the hose wasn't properly attached... crooked at the screw place if you know what I mean :) , or is your machine located above your head - water can't run back to it that way.

Increase your hose air temp to prevent condensation/rain out in the mask or hose.

It will go up to 86 degrees. You may or may not need all of that available temp.

The machine is on the hightstand level with my head. The hose drops down in a U shape, down and up to mask.

I will try that. Thank you!

What is the relative humidity in your house?
Why is your bedroom temperature at 68?

Not sure of the humidity.
Temp is due to menopausal wife. It can get ugly if it gets warm in there!

Happy wife means happy life. Keep her happy.
Usually all is needed is a bit more warm air in the hose to reduce the condensation. If not there are other options available but I always suggest increasing the hose air temp first because it's the easiest thing to do and works well most of the time. In the winter my bedroom runs around 55 to 60 degrees. Prime recipe for rain out but I manage it with using 86 degrees for hose air temp.
Now in the summer I don't need so much warmth because the house temp is higher.
The condensation in the mask or hose is just Physics in action. Warm air will hold more moisture than cold air.

Try a hose cozy.
Pad a cheek sells a nice one, or cpap.com, forum sponsors.

When moisture in hose condenses, it will run back into humidifier tank IF machine is lower than your head and no U kinks in hose. Consider lowering machine if increasing hose temp does not do the job. Also you can buy a hose cover to insulate the hose from the colder room temp. Amazon or CPAP supplier online. FWIW, I like a cooler room temp too.

We have always kept our bedroom cool at night. My wife grew up in a house using wood heat, so the house would get rather cold at night and she learned to sleep in a cold room. We route our hoses up over the head of the bed and use hose covers from Padacheek, and never have rain out problems. In the winter time, I set my hose temp at 80 degrees and 70 this time of year. The only time I ever had rain out was shortly after beginning treatment and we were on a trip. The hose dipped down quite a bit from the bedside table to the bed. Now, when we travel I carry two Cozy Hoze Boss, one for each of us since my wife now also uses a machine.

Wow, we turn our heat down to about 50 at night during the winter and I never use heat in my humidifier. The only time I EVER had moisture in my mask and hose is when I cranked up the heat in the humidifier because I had a nasty head cold. (well, when I used nasal pillows I had some annoying condensation right at the tips because my nose was warmer than the air).

So my advice would be to turn the temperature on the humidifier DOWN to reduce the difference between the room temperature and the hose/mask temperature.

Am I confused?

Turning down the heater setting to the humidifier is also an option but it also reduces the amount of humidity being delivered to the nasal mucosa and some people find that is a problem. If/when the nasal mucosa gets dried out more than it likes then the person can end up with some rather nasty and annoying symptoms. Reducing the humidity being delivered to the nasal mucosa isn't always a good option for some people.

When we turn down the heat to the humidifier plate it reduces the amount of moisture being added to the air going to the mask.
