I am using a Resmed AirSense 10 with a Wisp mask. Exhale relief is set at 3. While awake if I slow down my breathing to 8 or 10 seconds per breath the mask will start to flutter or jump. (I use slow breathing to relax) It's almost like the machine is telling me to breath more. To test it I deliberately held my breath. After about 3 seconds the mask would start to flutter. The longer I hold the more insistent the fluttering becomes. This seems to encourage over breathing. I assume this could be disrupting my sleep without me knowing it.
My wife has the same machine and the same issue. Anyone else notice this? Is there a solution???
Mask Fluttering and jumping
Re: Mask Fluttering and jumping
You are probably feeling the FOT kicking in. The machine doesn't know awake vs asleep because it only measures air flow and when you hold your breath then the machine uses FOT to help it decide if the lack of air flow is related to an obstruction in your airway or lack of effort.

You just need to breathe normally while awake.

That.
Now that you know it works, you can trust it will only kick in when you need it.
Or when you fool around with it.

I assume the machine uses FOT to measure and report the event. My pressure is set at a single level so it's not like it can use the reading to ramp up additional pressure. My respiration reading is always averages around 16 or greater. The closer one is to 10 or 12 breaths per minute the less likely one is to have an event. Is there a way to control or turn off FOS???
I assume the fluttering can wake up the brain even if I don't remember it in the morning.

Re: Mask Fluttering and jumping
No. You just have to prevent it from happening in the first place by breathing normally.
You would be surprised what the brain can get used to and not be causing a problem or arousals.
Example.....living near a train track....it learns to tune out the trains going by.
You can use OSCAR and actually look at FOT in action and see if it causes an arousal in the flow rate or not.

It takes a bit of work but you can actually spot arousal breathing on the flow rate graphs by zooming in.
As long as you sleep through it...doesn't matter.

Re: Mask Fluttering and jumping
I suggest you do breathing exercises while awake and not on the machine.

I live near a train track, and have become so used to trains that I slept through a lightning strike
less than 30 feet from the house. It blew out a big piece of a huge cottonwood tree.
I also slept through a tornado about a mile away.
