Question about surgery

Post by Jhonnytsunami » Sun Jan 31, 2021 5:20 am

I’m having a uppp surgery a month from now to get rid of my obstruction( I’ve been told I have very large tonsils) for my sleep apnea but I still have a central sleep apnea. I was diagnosed primarily for obstructive sleep apnea and a have a few episodes of central’s. Would it be dangerous for me to go through with the surgery. I’ve never been through general anesthesia before just wondering if anyone can give me advice.

I can't tell you how many surgeries I've had.... maybe around 20. I have never had any problems with anesthesia. I think it is normal to worry about it. I had carpal tunnel surgery on my right wrist one time. During the procedure, I was talking to the surgeon about the Astros. We was having a good conversation. When I felt him cutting the skin, I asked him if I should be asleep. He said.... "oh, yea!" It wasn't long after that I was in la-la land. Very few people have issues with anesthesia. I think you'll be ok.

I have not had as many surgeries as Sheriff, but I have had stomach, 2 shoulder, brain and a knee done in my elder years without problems. Never knew any one that had a UPP surgery. A few Centrals does not mean you have Central Apnea.

I had UPPP surgery about twenty years ago. I also had a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates corrected at the same time. Since then I have had several surgeries, some minor (carpal tunnel, orthoscopic knee repair, etc.) as well as major surgeries (total knee replacement, hip replacement, back surgery) with no problems from the anesthetics. I found the recovery from the UPPP to be quite painful for several days. It also took several years before I was able to enjoy spicy foods again. Before the surgery, I recommend you get some topical spray anesthetic such as Chloroseptic. I would use that to numb my mouth and throat so I could take other pain medicine. Spraying the back of the mouth and upper throat made it easier for me to swallow. I wish you the best of luck with your surgery, and hope you get the outcome you want.

Stop there! You have very large tonsils, yet you are having UPPP surgery?? Ask the surgeon why he would not just take the tonsils out and leave the rest of your throat alone. UPPP is irreversible, leaves permanent and difficult side effects, and often fails to resolve obstructive sleep apnea.

Please read this and get scared --->
This success rate, when compared with the potential complications of the surgery, has served to make the UPPP alone a rarely recommended procedure in the author’s center.

I'm scared for you. Please rethink this and let's discuss it again.
