When to change my CPAP

Post by Suneesh S » Fri Dec 18, 2020 10:18 pm

Hi
I am using S9 autoset since 2014. Oflate my display always shows usage time as 24 hrs with high AHI number around 14. I generally use only for 7hrs every night. Let me know how to resolve this issue. Also at what intervals should I change my cpap or mask.

Your machine is malfunctioning.
If unplugging it for a minute or so does not work, look for a replacement.
Masks/cushions, etc. last as long as you can still use them without difficulty.
It is good to have a backup mask, mask parts, hose, and tank because stuff always breaks at the worst time.

:x Thanks. I just want to understand if this is only a display problem. I still see sufficient pressure coming out and my wife tells me I dont snore. How long does a machine last and what is the criteria to make sure I need to change the machine. Thanks for your reply.

Most machines are replaced by insurance after 5 yrs (even if you use them for longer), but if you don't have insurance there are other ways to get one. Can you get a prescription? And pref. for e.g. Resmed Air Sense 10 Autoset (the "For Her" model is best - ignore the silly name) and is compatible with Oscar, the latest, best software available and you can download it free here. Have you had a new sleep test?

It's not that way so much anymore here in the US. Even Medicare now requires that the machine be broken beyond repair....even if it's been over 5 years. Pretty much all insurance are going this way now.

Get OSCAR and see what the machine is actually recording as for usage. Maybe it is just a display problem...maybe not.

Yeah...everyone is into cutting corners and saving money it seems. Medicare still shows the 5 year thing on the website but in real life they aren't allowing it automatically like they used to. The machine is supposed to be broken somehow. Now I know a lot of people say "so and so gave me one at the 5 year mark and my machine still works" but I suspect that a little white lie was maybe told by the DME.
Medicare or the other insurance companies don't require actual proof that the machine is broken and usually they just take a DME at their word.

And we all know that DMEs aren't known for telling the truth.

After 5+ years, my previous A10 Autoset For Her still worked, but it was getting noisy.
My DME was able to get Medicare to pay for my new machine.
It had over 17,000 hours on it, so my suspicion that the noise could be indicative of
an imminent breakdown seemed to be feasible enough--or the DME could have added details . . .
I know nothing . . .
