EPR...Yes or No?

Post by cnl390 » Mon Dec 14, 2020 9:12 pm

I have read different opinions on the use of EPR. Should I, or shouldn't I use it?

It's strictly a comfort issue. There is no right or wrong answer. If it helps you breathe better use it...if not...don't use it.
Are you really using the CPAP model you listed in your profile...that's the low end "brick" with no data available.

Yes! Or no!

LSAT is spot on, EPR is intended a comfort. There's little clinical reason to use it for most people.

I assume you're talking about the Air Mini? I only use it 4-5 times a year.

In your signature the clickable graphic links to the AirSense 10 CPAP, but the text below it says AutoSet.

Your equipment profile shows the AirSense 10 CPAP model
not the AirSense 10 AutoSet model.
Probably because you didn't find the AutoSet model in the dropdown menu list in the A's with all the other AirSense/AirCurve models.
That's because for some reason it got stuck down the R's....and they stuck ResMed as part of the model name.

When you have time you might edit your profile to reflect the correct machine and avoid confusion later.
Just scroll down to the R's and you will find it.

As for using EPR or not....strictly personal preference unless using it causes problems which it can for a very small subset of people using cpap. Extremely small subset of people but sometimes some sleep techs and others that is enough for them to be anti exhale relief. Over reaction IMHO and unwarranted.

Me....I really like it myself and it doesn't cause problems for me and it makes me feel much more like I was breathing naturally.
I like it so much that I prefer to use a machine that gives me what is the equivalent of 4 EPR if the regular machines could do 4 cm EPR.

So try it if you are curious. Watch your AHI and if it goes up a lot and you see a lot of centrals being flagged then we either back off or turn it off because that problem I talked about was that sometimes in a very few people using EPR or actually any form of exhale relief can cause a lot of centrals to pop up.

I currently use EPR 2, which is not as comfortable as 3. I get more events (not centrals) with 3. I think it drops my pressure too much when I exhale with it set on 3.

I originally tried EPR once, and was not a fan.
After some time, I had posted my Oscar Data here, and got advice to try EPR.
I dropped my events per hour substantially. IIRC, from 3 or so to almost always less than 1.

EPR for me - Not only yes...but Hell Yes!

I felt like I could not fully breathe when I first started using my CPAP. Breathing in was no problem - the problem was being able to breathe out!

And not being able to feel that I was fully completing the exhale made me feel like I was not able to fully breathe!

I complained to my doctor's nurse, the DME, anyone who would listen. They told me I'd get used to it!

It was only after watching some YouTube video's that a sleep doctor explained what EPR was and how to set it in the clinical menu.

Since setting EPR on my machine, breathing for me feels more natural...now that I'm able to "complete" the breathing cycle.
