New CPAP user struggles...

Post by MargOZ » Fri Oct 23, 2020 3:09 pm

Hi all, I'm new here and have been trialling a CPAP machine for just over a week. The first few days I was really down thinking I could never adjust to the feeling of a mask and didn't sleep much at all. The air felt SO strong I woke up bloated and with a sore chest. And one morning actually had a panic attack because my chest was so sore I thought it was my lungs not working properly and I couldn't breathe deeply!

I am in Bendigo Australia and am trialling a F&P Sleepstyle machine.

I'm hoping you can help me with some questions:

1. I think the biggest hurdle is my nose blocking up severely overnight. The Sleep Lab said to increase the humidity but I seem to go from not enough to having water in my mask and I can't find a balance. Has anyone else had the same happen and is there anything that has helped keep your nose from blocking? I do have crappy sinus so it's not unusual for my nose to block.

2. After telling the lab about the strength of the air pressure and my panic attack, they made some adjustments and now it feels like the air is too light, especially when I am awake which is happening a lot during the night because of my nose blocking. It's annoying that I can't contact them over the weekend to make changes! I'm wondering if the 'awake' setting is too low and if the upper limit is too low for when my nose is blocked and I need more air.

3. I usually toss and turn alot but am finding I stay on my left side most of the night now. But my left ear absolutely aches on waking! 🤔 Not sure if I need to roll over more to give that ear a break or whether I need to look at a softer pillow. I am also waking up in the morning with a tight neck and shoulders. Do CPAP pillows help people?

4. Masks! I initially tried a full and a nasal pillow mask and didn't find either comfortable. Have trialled a nose mask the last two nights and it's definitely more comfy except for my nose blocking up! For those who have struggled with a blocked nose, what mask has worked best?

Even though I feel 20 times more tired than I was pre-CPAP, I'm trying to stay positive! One thing that has improved some is waking up with my muscles aching badly due to them jerking/contracting to keep me breathing all night. I still wake up a bit sore but I'm hoping that will go once I get my nose issue sorted and sleep better and for longer.

Phew...sorry for the long post! 😁🌸

Sounds like you need a good nasal rinse before bed and then a decongestant spray.
