New user issues

Post by Jdan179 » Sun Aug 30, 2020 3:55 pm

I am a new CPAP user who is 2 nights into CPAP therapy. I am waking frequently during the night. I feel worse than before I started using CPAP. My AHI was 12.3 and 10.4 and mask fit showed 99 and 100% after my 2 nights using CPAP. Is this normal ?

Hello and welcome. Have you read the info for new users at the top of the page? It talks about using machine data to make sure your treatment is at its optimal effectiveness. While the AHI you mention is way too high to be considered effective, you have to consider that the machine doesn't know if you were awake or asleep, so if your sleep was restless due to all the new sensations, the irregularity of awake breathing may have caused your count to appear higher than it actually was during sleep time. Is there anything about your equipment particularly uncomfortable? Sometimes a high AHI settles down once a new user settles in to the treatment. Hard to know offhand if something needs adjusted or you just need time. If this persists, your machine data may hold helpful clues. Getting off to a rough start is not unusual. It has no bearing on your future success in using the treatment.

Thank you for the encouragement and information. I’m 6 days into therapy now and seem to be waking less during the night. My AHI seems to be easing down. Last night was 8.3 with 5 total obstructive anpeas. 100% mask fit and I am sleeping all night without having to get off CPAP.

Depending on how many hours you slept, with an AHI of 8.3, you had 56 episodes if you slept 7 hours. Hypopnias are considered apneas also.
