Those clusters don't really look like REM, do they? Possibly he can video tape himself at night to see what those clusters correspond to?

Actually they do look a lot like REM clusters to me but IMHO...doesn't matter if REM or if he is on his back (it isn't so easy to stay off one's back...been there and have the T shirt to prove it)....they need to be dealt with. REM may not be all the problem but I am betting a significant factor.

And this is coming from someone who has documented (sleep lab in person study) OSA 5 times worse in REM compared to non REM and supine sleeping didn't change the REM clusters. Been there and done that and built two walls to stay on one side all night long just to see if it made a difference in my pressure needs and it didn't.
