Foam as a mask liner

Post by cayenne » Mon Jun 15, 2020 12:44 pm

Hi, just got the AirTouch mask and it's worked fabulously the last 2 nights (leaks, comfort). But at $60 a pop and short lifespan the cushion replacements look like they will eat a significant hole in my wallet.

I'm wondering if anyone here has tried making a mask liner out of 1/2 " foam sprayed with water repellant or some other sealant to achieve more or less the same effect in a reasonable cost.

Won't it get hot and slippery?

There are masks that come with foam around the edges but they may be pretreated or something...or else you get hot and slippery.

There is open cell foam and closed cell foam. Closed cell foam shouldn't allow air through, but open cell would, and that would defeat the purpose.

But I think you will find it difficult to achieve success and beat the cost. I don't use that mask (or any mask with a cushion ... i use Nasal Pillows and maybe the new Bleep mask) so I don't have suggestions but I bet other people here do have some ideas on increasing your mask cushion's lifetime...

I believe somebody uses a pad a cheek liner under their airtouch mask to preserve the foam.
Somebody mentioned cleaning the foam--but I can't remember what they used.

I've been using the AirTouch for about 2 months and I wipe the foam down gently with a baby wipe each morning.

We have another member of the forum that uses a Padacheek liner and his cushions last several months before he has to change them.

FYI ... The medium F20 Airtouch cushion goes for $20 on Amazon. I've bought a couple and had no issues.
