can't get rid of sore throat
Re: can't get rid of sore throat
I'm using a Res Med Mirage Quatro mask
Not using oxygen, no
I'll look up what a nasal rinse is & try it.
I can breathe through my nose (maybe those 'Breathe-Rite' things you can buy in any supermarket would help somewhat?) I'll also try turning the humidity down
Yes I think I need a more sophisticated machine; I think insurance companies want you to try the cheapiest machines first, so I'll have to make a case that I need a better machine, so I'll also ask about a BI-PAP machine.
Your info was helpful. Thank you

re: can't get rid of sore throat
Hi my name is Tonja. I was recently diagnosed with sleep abnea and given a cpap machine set on 13. My machine is a ResMed H4i S8 series II with heated humidifier. It came with a Mirage Quattro full face mask. I do suffer with sinus & allergy problems, but my doctor said the mask would not make it worse. Additionally, I have always snored and the doctor said the machine would help that. My symptoms have always consisted of runny stuffy nose, itching, shortness of breath, itchy runny eyes and sometimes sore throat. The sore throats that I have experienced in the past have not been a daily occurances and were mild enough to disappear in a day or two. Since I have been using the CPAP machine, I wake up with severe sore throats every morning... It almost feels like streep and the back of my entire throat is fire red. Gargling with salt water regularly offers little relief. When I stopped using the machine, my sore throats stopped and when I tried using it again, my sore throats resumed on a daily basis. When I read the complaints of others on this matter, I completely identified because this has been my experience as well. Is there any other treatments for sleep abnea... this side effect is not bareable for me. I don't want to use this machine anymore....

Perhaps we could review the basics...
Have you ever disinfected your hose, mask, and humidifier? Keep in mind that cleaning and disinfecting are different processes.

Re: can't get rid of sore throat
I clean the machine the way I was instructed. I am not sure what process is needed to disinfect the parts. The guy that went over the maintenance and cleaning of the machine basically told me some parts were to me cleaned with mild soap and others just soaked in water and dried. What was I not told?
Thanks for your reply,
Tonja

Re: can't get rid of sore throat
Tonja, Cleaning involves getting the big chunks off of the equipment. Disinfecting involves killing the various germs and bugs that are left after cleaning.
The process involves cleaning first, then disinfecting.
Disinfectants include bleach and hydrogen peroxide and then there are some other industrial chemicals that are available from CPAP stores designed to disinfect CPAP equipment.
The whole reason I bring this up is because of your throat infection. It is possible to clean, and still re-infect your throat. To stop that cycle, you need to go to the next step and disinfect.
Now I am not sure disinfecting your equipment will eliminate all of your problems, but it will eliminate your equipment as a source of those problems. I think it is worth a try.

Re: can't get rid of sore throat
How's this for a late entry into this thread! I'm having the same issues since using a full mask CPAP - severe raw & sore throat. On top of this, my lungs are becoming irritated & sore, & it feels like my lungs are filling with some fluid from the irritation. It makes my mouth taste funny when I cough too. I'll tell you what the sore throat thing is - the air is blowing through my nose all night & causing a dry spot on my esophagus. This is NOT good - the normally wet esophagus is not supposed to get dried-out like this! I believe this can quickly lead to much more serious effects & I am going to discontinue using this machine. Next step is to talk with my sleep apnea doctor.

Re: can't get rid of sore throat
Ive been using CPAP since 2007 and I cant get rid of my sore throat. Welcome to the club, I say. I do everything right and I get a lot of ear, nose and throat infections. No infections other places though. Some bronchitis in my lungs, but Im not sure if thats really a true infection or just inflammation type stuff.
This sh*t is gettin old, IMO.

I've tried cold water, adjusting the mask & checking it for leaks till the cows come home, cleaning everything after use, etc. But nothing works.
Any ideas??

Your doctor is full of bull and is lying to you. While CPAP has helped me overall a huge amount, there are side effects to it. The high pressure air is in itself a ear, nasal and throat irritant. Think about it. You lay there all night long hooked up to a machine that blows high pressure air into your nose and mouth. Seven days a week. You dont have to be a rocket scientist to figure out some tissues in the ENT area are going to get at least mildly irritated or inflamed. Or even infected over time.velveeta72 wrote:Hi my name is Tonja. I was recently diagnosed with sleep abnea and given a cpap machine set on 13. Re: can't get rid of sore throat
Nobody uses bleach to disinfect their gear. LOL Ive been using CPAP for years and this is the first time Ive ever heard of anyone using bleach to clean their CPAP gear. If I used bleach on my gear, my gear would be breaking down three times as fast. And I'd be tearing up my lungs and sinuses at night breathing leftover bleach residues.
Honestly man, using bleach on CPAP gear is one of the craziest ideas Ive ever read on a CPAP forum, ever. The harshest thing I use is white vinegar. I was taught by RTs and DMEs to wash my gear in mild, non bacterial liquid soap such as Ivory. And disinfect the humidifier pot ONLY with a solution of white vinegar and water. Then rinse thoroughly and air dry the humidifier pot.
I dont disagree with you about the need to clean well and disinfect well btw. Im totally inline with you there. But advising people to bleach their CPAP gear is like giving really dangerous advice over the Internet.

Re: can't get rid of sore throat
I've been using respironics machines for @14 years. The first one for about 12 years with the original humidifier without sore throat problems. The original plastic humidifier tank was not clear plastic it was an opaque. The new tank is clear plastic and I'am getting a sore throat with this new design. Now we have been well informed about bad chemicals in plastics and even though this new tank is made with a high grade plastic and you add heat to it to help vaporize the water I am wondering if their is something new in this type of plastic that is gassing off and causing the sore throat.BY the way the internet description of this grade of plastic was stable for this temperature range,BUT if ANY recycled plastic was added to the formula ALL BETS WERE OFF! So I am still wondering whether there is a chemical aggravating the throat area.

Re: can't get rid of sore throat
I also have a persistent sore throat caused by CPAP. It's only recently developed in the winter so it may be seasonal or due to allergies (this is my first full winter with CPAP and I do have bad allergies). I have no mask leaks, use a humidifier set on 6 out of 10, have a heated tube, use a dreamwear under the nose mask, and have a Devilbliss Intellipap machine with pressure at 4 cmH20. I tried switching to a full face mask but my migraines got worse so I switched back to the nasal mask. I might try raising or lowering the humidifier, but lowering the humidifier leads to stuffy nose and worse sleep.

Apparently an uncommon thing, as there were less than a handful of people in 10 years.
Mostly unregistered, and the intent of the latest one is a question.

Anybody have thoughts on using the Apple iZone Sanitizer with Resmed AirSense 14
But go ahead and keep sucking on your poisonous iCrap product, the fewer Apple users the better.
