Best for the OP to just ignore comments like this.
There is no need to do anything to the machine beyond what is recommended in the provider manual, which is "wipe down the outside, change the filter (and optionally the humidifier tank, though I'd just give it a good wash with hot water and soap).

Pathogens, bacteria and viruses, are not going to live long on any dry surface. If the machine has not been used in a week or more then you are good to go.

If the mask retains his scent, she might want to keep it nearby if it gives her comfort.
