Off topic - Prilosec

Post by joeljjk11 » Thu Jan 30, 2020 3:47 pm

So I finished a round of Prilosec due to horrible heartburn about a month ago. My heartburn is way better now but I have noticed I am extremely sensitive to coffee now and it makes me very anxious and jittery, almost to the point where I don’t want to drink it. I know many people have experience with GERD and heartburn meds here due to CPAP treatment so I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else after they took Prilosec or a similar medication

When did your CPAP usage start?

Has CPAP been effective in treating your OSA-related symptoms, subjectively (how you feel) and/or objectively (AHI)?

What's your history of heartburn? Did it start prior to CPAP usage or after? Has it gotten better or worse with CPAP?

Have you recently started drinking more coffee than usual?

You mention "I know many people have experience with GERD and heartburn meds here due to CPAP treatment" and I'm wondering if it's a chicken-or-the-egg situation. As I understand it, OSA may cause pressure changes in the airway that lead to heartburn. But CPAP can also cause aerophagia which could lead to heartburn. And then there's this... https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3659388/ "Aerophagia May Not Cause Gastroesophageal Reflux"

I'm interested in knowing more!

So, don't drink it.

Caffeine, how does it work?

Prilosec was never meant to be a long term medication, so it sounds like your doctor did the right thing in only prescribing it for a short period. However, there is what is known as "rebound" reflux when you stop it abruptly and that can make symptoms worse for a time. Some doctors have their patients wean off of it instead of going cold turkey. https://www.webmd.com/heartburn-gerd/ne ... symptoms#1

You might look at two resources that have been very helpful to me:

And Why Stomach Acid is Good for you by Jonathan Wright, M.D. https://www.amazon.com/Why-Stomach-Acid ... ics&sr=8-1

In the meantime, I'd stay away from coffee, until your gut is more healed.

I have had the opposite experience with heartburn. I have suffered from Gerd (heartburn) for years. I have been taking dozens of antacids per day, including all night long for quite awhile. Also, I have prescription Famotidine which has helped some. However, within 3 days of starting CPAP therapy, my heartburn has completely stopped. No more drugs or antacids needed.

Ugh, sounds awful. I would advise you to get an esophagoscopy done to see the extent of damage (if any) to the esophagus, and to rule out any possible cancer due to having GERD for years! Similar to you, I had suffered for a long time. The mandibular advancement device helped somewhat, but ever since CPAP I haven't had any heartburn.
