encore pro db installation problem

Post by pippyn » Sat Dec 16, 2006 4:59 pm

HI, successfully installed encore pro on home pc. Now I'm putting ot on work laptop so i can download my results while in class in another city next week. Only, it won't install. Gives me an error "Setup was unable to create Encor Pro Database" and quits. I have admin privileges and room on pc. any ideas about what problem could be? Is it smart enough to know it was previously installed?

Is there already an SQL server installed on the laptop?
Check the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\
The encore database is in a subdirectory called MSSQL$ENCOREPRO

there is an Micrososft SQL Server directory with three subs: 80, 90, and MSSQL.1.

i tried pointing the installation to Microsoft SQL Server2 thinking that might help, but didn't seem to make a difference.

Yeah I have seen a problem similar to this. It sounds like you already have an instance of an SQL server installed on your laptop? (probably for some other application)

Try to determine what other application is using SQL an see if you can remove it. Take a look in your Add/Remove Program to what is installed with respect to SQL.

I've looked around in there. it appears the MSSQL.1 was added by the encore pro app. i've poked around in the 80 and 90 directories and can't tell what apps they're associated with. As you can imagine, I'm reluctant to uninstall them, this being the work 'puter and all. What if I partioned the disk or something? and installed encore on the new drive? if that would work, how would i do it?

I don't think the problem is the location where you are trying to install Enocre Pro. I *think* the problem maybe that there is another SQL server already installed and running on that machine. Can you see another version of SQL server listed in the Control Panel under add/remove programs?

yup there's a microsoft sql server 2005 and about 4 others that are related to the 2005 entry. no "microsoft sql server" by itself though. maybe it was added by encore pro...but the date stamp was last year. weird.

hold the phone!!! i just cleaned up all the stuff with current date stamps (after stopping an sqlserver process that was running)and uninstalled encore pro. rebooted. took a deep breath and tried again. looks like it's working now!

boy, i hope i haven't hosed up one of my other apps ::slightly worried but not gonna lose sleep::
