Stress/Depression/Anxiety/Tiredness w/ new CPAP... whats going on?

Post by CyclonePap » Sun Dec 08, 2019 8:19 pm

I'm having issues with feeling tired waking up. My old cpap would force air into my nasal mask to make me breathe when I was having an "episode". I've noticed this CPAP doesn't do that, more it seems like it's just a constant pressure of airflow, which seems to be causing more episodes. I'm experiencing sleepiness, stress, anxiety and depression during the day and this is the only thing I can attribute it to. Also, I'm really gassy upon wakening. Idk if it is from gasping for air or receiving more air than normal. (Sorry, I dont have a flash drive in the cpap to receive exact information) Nothing else in my life has changed. Is this a setting or mode that could be changed to make it suit my needs better?

Different machines have different algorithms. I always felt I was being "forced" to breathe even while awake with my old Philips Respironics System 1, while the ResMed autoset is smooth as glass and I never feel that it's trying to control my breathing rhythm.I find it 1000 times more comfortable and my AHI's are consistently below 0.3.

You may need a different pressure with the different algorithm --have you checked your charts and the settings? Did you make sure it's set up properly for the type of mask you are using?

It's impossible to come up with any ideas about what might be going on without even a smidgen of information.

There is data on the machine's LCD screen in the sleep report...you can at least give us that.

You can see AHI and the event category breakdown ...and a 95% leak number and a 95% pressure number.
Any information is better than no information.

And the machine uses a SD card and not a flash drive.
You can get a SD card from Walmart or similar store or online...any generic SD card will work...at least 2 GB in size....bigger will work too as it is hard to find 2 GB cards now.

To see the on screen data you have to change Essentials setting in the clinical menu from On to Plus.
Explained in the manual.

What brand and model was your old machine?
What were the settings on that machine?
What are the settings now on this current machine?

Current clinical settings:

Mode: CPAP
Set Pressure 10.0
Mask: Nasal
Ramp: Off
EPR: Off
Humidity: 3
Tube: slimline
AB Filter: no

Events (AHI) per hour: 1.9
Leak: 7L/min
AHI: 1.3
Total AI: 0.7
Central AI: 0.5

I see no percentages for mask seal and humidifier but they both have a smiley face on them.

Maybe try EPR on?

My old cpap was a Philips Respironics REMstar Pro C-Flex + at 10.0 pressure. I have no data for it. Used no humidifier. A lot of the options for my new cpap arent even available for my old.

Hopefully this can help. I apologize for the lack of information.

How many hours of sleep are you getting?
Are you having trouble falling asleep and/or staying asleep?
Take any medications of any kind? If so, what?

The new machines now are much easier to breathe with....unlike your old machine which probably did feel more like a brute.
The new machines are going to feel much less intrusive in terms of the air and the EasyBreathe technology on the ResMed machines make for an ultra smooth transition.
You are used to old brute and it will take some time to get used to the new way of doing things. It's different and in time you will adjust.
There's nothing wrong with your data or your machine....you just need to get accustomed to the new way of doing things.

Play with EPR...see if you even like it or not. If you like it...use it.

Your old machine *absolutely* *positively* did NOT do that.

In fact, your old machine did nothing but blow constant pressure, it could not react to your changing needs.

It could (depending on how it was set) offer a little pressure relief on exhale.)

Why not see your GP 'anyway', in case what's going on isn't about OSA/Cpap? You should at least get checked out with labs, etc... you never know. Thing is we tend to think everything's about Cpap no matter what because it's there every day, so we can't sort symptoms from it or explain them away to ourselves as just being about OSA, but what if they're not?

Do try EPR, maybe even just 1 to start. It could help you feel as though you’re breathing more normally.

Small (2 or 4 gig) sd cards may be found in some older digital cameras.
We found one in a thrift store. --for a dollar!

hey janknitz,
This is what I am dealing with right now. I cannot get to sleep on the Dreamstation Auto because it feels like its capping my inhales and rushing my exhales. My breathing cycle feels all messed up, even when I'm just sitting with it on, and I end up feeling suffocated and out of breath. I feel instant relief when I take the machine off.

Did you buy your ResMed device or get it through insurance? what level of exhalation relief does it have?

Turn off *flex, or just ignore what you think the machine 'wants' you to do, and breath normally, make it follow you.

Yeah, even with EPR turned off I felt being forced to breathe with the PRS1.

I have an HMO so you get what you get from them, and luckily it was the ResMed. If you don't have an HMO you can get any machine with the same billing code, most insurers don't care what manufacturer you use (DME's do because of profit margins).

You mean *flex? Respironcis machines don't have EPR.
