Switching to Resmed auto from Dreamstation??

Post by Blackhilt » Sun Nov 17, 2019 9:08 pm

My almost 2 year old phillips dreamstation is permanently stuck on SERVICE REQUIRED error. I'm going to contact my dealer...noinsurancemedicalequipment tommorrow to see about repair under warranty. Even if they fix it I'm a bit disappointed in the fragility of the device. It's been giving this error, on and off for a few months spending up to an hour sometimes trying to get it out of the error. She finally refuses to comply and must head off to the repair man.

I wanted to try the Resmed autoset, hoping its a more resilient machine but I'm curious as to ease of adaptation. I think I've read elsewhere that there might be a period of adaptation from one device to another. I already went through the aclimatization period with my dreamstation and would prefer NOT to go through that again. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks for reading.

My bet is that the period will mostly be filled with "WOW, THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER" exclamations.

All I have heard points to that.
You may curse whatever forces put you in the possession of the previous machine.
It happens fairly often.
Enjoy.

Personally, I prefer the way the breathing feels on my VAuto (ResMed) than the equivalent DreamStation (Respironics). Both are good machines and the adjustment from no PAP to PAP is much greater than any adjustment between the machines. That said, I prefer my ResMed a great deal over the Respironics-- one synced well with me and the other seemed to fight me. YMMV

Not entirely apples to apples, but I used a Philips S1 for 6 years. Although I got used to it, I never particularly liked it. It always made me feel that I had to breathe in its rhythm instead of my own, it was noisy and the air was always frigid no matter how high the humidifier (which broke in year 3 from a known manufacturer's defect) was set. I don't know if they made substantial improvements with the Dream Station, but one would hope so.

When I got my ResMed I was worried about the adaptation period, too. But I put it on and went to sleep--entirely comfortable and easy. The algorithm is not pushy, it seems intuitive, it's 1000 times quieter, the air will warm if you turn up the humidifier and isn't freezing cold in any case.

So my guess is that PR is exactly right.
