Leak 20l/min

Post by Fredi » Sat Oct 12, 2019 11:04 am

Im new on using cpap auto airsense 10. My average ahi for 55 days, shows a value of 1.1. First day it showed a value of 6 l/min leak, 2 weeks 13 l/min, a month usage 22 l/min and after 55 days it shows a leak of 20l/min. My average sleeptime is 7.2hrs/day. Only one day it showed frowny face and i tried to fix my mask (wide fx, softedge). After this day (as i record day 45) till now, leak rate drop to 20 l/min. My question is, do i have to make any change regarding my leak rate? Thats because my brother uses the same machine and his leak rate is about 6l/min. Overall i see alot of changes (i dont feel anymore tired after work and i feel like more energized) and i will defintely use it further. But if theres any problem i want to fix it to achieve the most benifits.

The sleep report on the machine is showing you what is called a 95% number. ResMed uses 95% and Respironics uses 90%.
The definition of 90/95% numbers are "where you were at OR below for 95% of the night".
It is NOT an overall average where you spent 95% of the night.

ResMed large leak territory is 24 L/min excess leak (which is what ResMed machines report).
You won't see Mr Frowny face until you spend 30% or more of the night above 24 L/min.

So...with a 20 L/min 95% number....the bulk of the night you were at or below large leak territory. If the leaking doesn't wake you up then I wouldn't worry about it. Well within the machine's ability to compensate for.
95% number are easily inflated to make things look worse than they are by relatively short periods of time at higher numbers.
So even a higher 95% number doesn't always mean that the leaks were in the toilet for the entire night.
To see what really happened in terms of leaks you need to use available software and examine the leak line itself.
I have an example here of where the 95% number makes it look like I had a horrible leak night but in reality the time spent in large leak wasn't all that prolonged.

If my 95% leak number is below 30 I don't even give it a second though as long as the leaks don't wake me up.
Now when any leak wakes me up...no matter how big or little....then I want to fix it because anything that wakes me up is unwanted because it is disturbing my sleep.

Copy that, thanks for the information.
So it could be 10 l/ min at 2 am lets say and peaking 20 l/min at 4 am. It showes the max leak rate achieved during 95% of the night, with values recorded <=20 l/min.
Maths helps me in this issue:-)
