Drooling question

Post by xUnderCoverHoBo » Sat Oct 12, 2019 8:46 am

Hi so I’m a few weeks into my first cpap therapy. I have begun drooling at night and I’m wondering if I can use paper towels to dry the inside of my mask in the middle of the night. If not can I just use a towel or something? Looking for advice as I have had to dry my mask at least twice a night.

Have you tried taping your mouth?

I ask this because you say you are new to therapy.

Are you sure it is drool and not rainout?

It does sound more like rainout.
Consider a heated hose or a hose cozy.

Yes I use a heated hose. What is rain out I havent heard before. I think it is drool because even before the cpap therapy I would drool. I will try taping my mouth shut and see if that helps. As far as in the night is it fine to use a paper towel to dry the inside of the mask? Just wondering if using paper products on the mask is alright or if I could use a towel. I am only 2 weeks into every night usage so it could just be me getting used to it.

I use a kleenex, I can usually shive it under the seal, wipe off the drool, and go back to sleep. Sometimes, I leave a kleenex half stuck under their to keep it dry. Many people make their own mask liner with a t-shirt. Some buy a liner made for their mask by a user here - Pad-a-cheek.

A paper towel won't hurt the mask at all. As for the drool. For me, it comes and goes. Some nights can be really bad, Most nights, not at all. And I know I drooled sometimes before cpap too. You will figure out what works best for you. I sleep with a kleenex box on the bed, so that just happens to be handy when i need it.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

What is CPAP rainout?
Rainout occurs when the temperature of the room is colder than the temperature of the humidified air traveling through your hose. Think of a window in a warm room or a cold beverage on a hot day. Eventually, all that built up condensation in your CPAP hose will start splashing you in the face. :(

if you wouldn't mind a suggestion, could you please keep to one thread for a bit? it makes it easier to keep track of you.

thank you.

also, could you go to your profile and fill in your equipment? that way, it'll show up at the bottom of your post, as mine does below.

good luck!

I usually fold some toilet paper and leave it in the mask so it acts like a sponge, on the side of the mask -- works well most of the nights!
