Heartburn issue

I have acid refux disease and take medication but since I started using cpap therapy Ive been waking up with heartburn and it last all day long even after I take my meds...I have not had heartburn like this for over 10yrs. Can anyone tell me if cpap is the cause of recent HB and will it subside eventually ?

Gramps reflux was cured almost immediately when he started CPAP treatment.

Heartburn is, obviously, often the cause of perceived heart pain, thus the name. It can also go the other way. In other words, you may have developed an actual heart condition that is being masked by your history of heartburn. If that's the case, it's a medical emergency. The fact that your medications aren't relieving your symptoms leads me to think you have more than heartburn going on. At a minimum, you need to see a doctor, and if it were me, I'd see a cardiologist.

Usually when your CPAP causes increase in GERD it's because you are swallowing some air--the bloating can push stomach contents up into the esophagus and airway. This is called "aerophagia" and aerophagia is discussed at length in many posts here--put the term in the search box below the title "cpaptalk.com".

The easiest way to deal with aerophagia is to get a good seal with your tongue on the roof of your mouth so that air doesn't enter the mouth and get swallowed into the stomach. It takes some practice to get that good seal--you do that by consciously practicing holding your tongue there all day unless you are eating or talking. It doesn't work for everyone.

Position helps too. Try lying on your left side, that reduces heartburn a lot because of the position of the sphincter. You might have less trouble if your head is elevated, too.

I've had the opposite--CPAP reduces my GERD a lot and position does not help me much--I can have reflux sitting fully upright. But I have seen others here have increased GERD because of aerophagia.

The worst stomach pain I have ever had was when the warranty ran out on my gall bladder.
Aerophagia was a walk in the park after that.
Just saying, check that gall bladder.

So was mine... completely. Getting off the meds was not easy, however.

Hi everyone and sorry I haven't replied back I'm not getting notified people posted to me. Anyway my heartburn has gotten better on it's own but it does rear it's ugly head once in a while.

I also have very severe acid reflex. I am also am on medication. For me being on CPAP has changed my life dramatically for the good. It does not seem to affect my acid reflex in anyway. If your problem continues you should probably check with your doctor.

I just had to spend two nights without CPAP because of the Northern California power outage. My reflux was at it's very worst! About every half hour I would have reflux. I ended up not being able to sleep at all the second night after a few hours of that. Miserable.

I can't believe I used to live that way before CPAP!!!
