Using Nasal Pillow Mask, Dry Mouth - Chin Strap?

Post by jagstyles » Sun Sep 01, 2019 6:57 pm

I've noticed that I wake up on man occasions with a very dry mouth. I use a Nasal Pillow Mask (Airfit P10) and I'm showing great numbers in the various reports from my CPAP machine. The issue is dry mouth. I thought this would show up on my reports via an increase in "events" but that hasn't been the case. I can only assume that I'm opening my mouth during sleep causing the issue.

Would a chin strap help address the issue and if so, are there any straps you would recommend? Are they all pretty much equally effective? Also, do you recommend putting the chin strap on first and then the mask or the other way around?

Thanks

I have found great success using both the Ruby Adjustable chin strap made by Puresom. That is my newest & favorite, & I have tried just about every chin strap on the market in the last year and a half. My second favorite is the Halo style chin strap. I recommend any chin strap that has a band that fastens on the back of the head. These types are least likely to slip off during the night. Some people wear the chin strap under the mask headgear & some wear it over. Good luck!

and yes, a chin strap did help me with my dry mouth problem. I am now using a full face mask, but still wear the chin strap as I still get dry mouth without it.

Ideally you would download the Oscar software so you could post a chart or two:

Less ideally, what are the leak numbers you’re getting from your machine or from MyAir?
Oscar software is available at https://www.sleepfiles.com/OSCAR/

For a super cheap way to try a chin strap concept, use a scünci headband. It is effectively a tubular elastic. I actually cut a lengthwise slit of about 3-4 in into it and use it like the p10 headgear. Having said that I have long hair that I put up and that helps anchor all the gear

I agree, an elastic hairband, any brand, is a thing to try first before investing in a chin strap. The hairband did work for me, but only if I used TWO headbands one for the chinstrap & the other to put around the head to hold it on. Chinstraps (or hairbands) without a back brace don't work for me. That's why the Ruby & halo chin straps work well for me. But there is nothing wrong with using two hairbands. Last night, even though I had my Ruby chin strap on, I had minor leaks last night anyway. Sometimes the tossing & turning is just too much no matter how "battened" down you are.

The only way I did find to stop dry mouth is mouth taping. Chin strap will help but don't prevent to open lips .

amen. and you can use it over and over for a number of times until it just gets too stretched out to work anymore. or at least that's the case for me and my gigantic noggin!

i'm curious about that split you mention. do you stitch it at the split? it seems to me that if i tried that, it would just keep splitting and not have enough strength to do it's job.

I have used a soft cervical collar for the past 1 1/2 yrs and it works great. I am a fairly large man and a I use a narrow collar 3 1/2 inches I believe (4' normal size). Bought 2 of them on Amazon for like $12.00 each.

When lying in bed it presses gently on bottom of ur chin, pushing it up and keeping my mouth closed at night.

I tried the chin strap and never liked it, hopes this helps.
