cpap "hyperness"?
cpap "hyperness"?
hi all--
i've been doing cpap for about a month, with great success some nights and awful results other nights and everything inbetween. overall, however, i need much less sleep and am much more alert, to the point where it is a little scary. and i was wondering whether others had experienced something similar. in a word, i have become "hyper." by that, i mean that my mind sometimes races. i learn things at law school much more quickly, which is good, but sometimes it seems that my mind goes too fast for me. if the cpap works well on a night, i can function well on just a few hours of sleep the next day, which i never could before. obviously, that's not optimal. but it's a marked difference from the zombie that used to sleep a lot and was almost always in a fog. anyone else see a radical difference that might just be a bit too much for them? perspective? (i am not manic-depressive but i do feel a little manic on cpap.)
any comments would be helpful. thanks.

Mental changes using Xpap
I can definately chime in on this post!!
I have been on Auto Pap for 12 weeks now, and yes, some nights are good nights, some not so good. But I get racey sometimes at work. Giggling a lot and being extra good spirited (not that I'm a grouch usually, but with the years of sleep deprivation I have had, I wasn't the type to laugh a lot and be cheery). But the past month or so, I have been chipper, almost to the point I feel as if people might think I'm being superficial!
Although the happiness is a big change, I notice the opposite of what you're describing as mentally things coming faster to you. I am an Xray tech and I've done my job for 15 years, I am quite efficient and rarely have to repeat things and hardly forget a face of a patient, infact I am the type to remember certain patients that come back and see me even a year later. My short term memory has always been bad due to the severe OSA, so for instance if my friend told me she was doing something on Friday, when I saw her Monday I would totally not even remember until the end of the day. I am making mistakes at work that I never used to make when I was sleep deprived, which to me, is so strange. One would think it would be the opposite. I just attribute it to my body going through massive changes, and repairing itself from all the damage that has occurred both mentally and physically.
But yes, in answer to your question, the raciness and giddiness, or even more alertness definately seems to be par for the course. At least for me that is.
Good luck with the weeks and months to come.

Yes, I can certainly relate to your situation. When I first started cpap (6 weeks also) I could really tell a difference. I have, for the last 10 years or so, been a pretty sedentary person. Now I cant sit for more than 20 minutes at a time and I am amazed at how much clearer I think. I guess what I am trying to say is that I do think much faster but I have also learned to process and retain the things that I hear and see much better. Does this make sense? I have also found that I am much less temperamental and have much more patience. This is all of course on my good nights.

suzy--
the social/happiness aspect you mention is a big change, too. but i feel it comes from the giddiness/raciness. i feel more comfortable with people and contribute more to conversations. but i feel it is somewhat false, not so much superficial, because my comments that have everyone laughing come out of my mouth so fast that i wonder where they come from.
yes, it's not so good when you're not performing your job as well.
anyone else experience anything similar?

Do you mean you feel jittery, or you just have a lot of energy?

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

I’m thrilled except I feel so jittery like I’m on speed. My heart is racing and I’m very anxious. Feel like my heart is jumping out my chest.

Time to talk to a DOCTOR!
This could be serious.
A racing heart should be considered urgent, if not a full-blown emergency.
