Surgery Recovery Room. Without PAP

Post by Patriot Partner » Wed Aug 07, 2019 9:45 am

So..... They're done doing your surgery and yank out the breathing tube, and wheel you to recovery.....

Anyone experienced severe apnea during that 45 minutes?

You are watched like a hawk in the recovery room...and you wear a pulse ox to monitor oxygen levels.
Trust me...if you run into trouble they will be right there to wake you up and encourage you to breathe.

Right.

But if my pulse ox went below 90 I'd be sick as hell

I wonder if you can request that they hose you up..... ?

Or at least shove an old rotten garden house down your pie hole....lol

Or make sure you're awake with electroshock bursts lol

But seriously, it takes me 40 min to wake up....

No doubt I stop breathing part of that

I was at 90 for two years, I was far from dying.... The alarms go off and they yell at you to breath, they don't like to hear the alarms. Jim

Unfounded fears.

If you were to ever actually watch what they do in the recovery room....you wouldn't worry.

They watch breath by breath and they will yell at you to breathe and wake you up.

I just had a procedure done yesterday morning. They asked me if I used a cpap while they were prepping me. I said yes, and they had one ready in case i needed it. In the recovery room, the nurses never left my side and i was monitored continuously until I was released.

Google "nasal trumpet", and talk to your anesthesiologist.. it's a non issue.

Talk to your doctor about this. They will not put on your CPAP without a doctor's order, and even then they will panic because they don't know how to set it up, and wait for "respiratory" to come and hook you up which might be days after your discharge

If the doctor thinks it necessary you may get that order, but more than likely you will be told that you will be closely monitored in recovery and there's no need.

They probably did not know your pressure and wouldn't have a proper mask.

Yes, I agree. Bring your own and tell them about it!

I had wrist surgery awhile back.

2 weeks later this lady called me who had been the nurse in the recovery room

Turns out we'd had a long conversation and she'd invited me to church

I had NO idea who she was

Nor emembered ONE word of the conversation

I pretty much told her my life story in there

They asked me my pressure and what type of mask I used.

A lot of surgeries are done without actually putting a person to sleep with general anesthesia. They give us what I always called "the I don't care what you do to me drug"....it's mixture of a relaxant and an amnesiac so we don't remember anything (good or bad).
I had pins put in a broken wrist...nerve block and the "I don't care what you do to me drug"...I don't remember anything...and some people would think that they slept but that's really not the case. I spent the entire surgery time trying to talk the doctor into letting me mow the yard in a cast on the riding lawn mower. Don't remember one bit of it.

So unless someone is really getting general anesthesia...there is unlikely to be any sleeping in the recovery room anyway. We just don't remember what happens in the recovery room.

I believe it

Anyone have a recurring dream that you're awake while they're operating?

I just had my gallbladder out less than a month ago. I was required to bring my cpap with me. I included a note inside the bag with some info. I incliuded my settings and the need to add water to the humidifer since I really need the humidity. I had already adjusted the temp since hospitals tend to be cooler, and I get water in the hose if it is too cool. (I normally keep my temp set low as I like the cool air, but I keep a warm room.) That said, it was not needed, but they were definitely checking on me. I woke up in the recovery room less than an hour and a half after I went to the OR. I was told the surgery is usually about an hour and a half, so I was awake pretty quickly afterward. I was also told there would be a tube in during surgery, and that it would be out before I woke up.

When I work up, a nurse was telling me it was okay and that I was just waking up. She told me I was in recovery, and it was good to rest and try to sleep a little. I did not fall asleep, though I closed my eyes often. I could hear her across the room telling the other nurse that I was doing really well and that my oxygen had not gone below 95%., I remember thinking, duh, I am awake, not asleep. But clearly, they were monitoring me to make sure I was doing okay. I was released after only an hour. Didn't even go to the second room that I had been told about.

My mom had surgery last October. She took her machine as well. They had hers on her and sent her home with a strict reminder to keep using it as her oxygen was dropping after they pulled out the tube. I have also seen her oxygen drop a little while awake anytime she is reclined. She will drop from 98 to 93 while awake. She also had more of a sore throat afterward due to the tube in her throat. I went into my surgery expecting that because of her experience. I have a more narrow throat than her, so I planned for a sore throat by getting apple sauce, noodle, soup, and cough drops. I used some of each, but it was only sore for part of the second day.

If I had been asleep longer or had to spend the night, I am sure the cpap would have been put on me. They were taking great care of me.
