CPAP makes my nose stuffy ; anyone else too?

Post by derlaine » Wed Jul 17, 2019 3:17 pm

Hospital just had me take home a CPAP after a UARS diagnosis. On my First night using CPAP, the CPAP made my nose extra stuffy. I did a nasal rinse 3 hours prior bedtime . I did bring this up at the hospital since when they were teaching me to use CPAP I already felt my nose get stuffier . They said it's just the nose getting irritated at the air being pushed in and I still need to give it a try. I read online people use humidifiers but I highly doubt that will help since traveling to humid countries makes my nose really stuffy .

Anyone else have experience with CPAP making their nose stuffy ? Would love to hear people's experience.

Humidification DOES help. The trick is that you need ENOUGH humidification, and not TOO MUCH humidification--and that's different for everyone. It's a little like Goldilocks, you need to have the humidification "just right".

All that air going across mucous membranes at night is drying, regardless of the relative humidity. So most people need a humidifier .

If you fill in your equipment we could help you with adjustments. Most machines have built-in humidifiers. Fill it with distilled water, and put it on a medium setting. See if that takes care of your nasal congestion. If you are still stuffy, try dialing it down 1 notch and try that for a night. If it makes your congestion worse, dial it up 1 notch past the medium setting. Keep working with the setting until you find your personal "sweet spot".

100% the opposite, clears mine up, I no longer use a HH, I just keep a ice water by the bed. Jim

We all must find our own path, one size doesn't fit all, your mileage may vary!

welcome aboard.

many of us have stuffed up noses. it may sound odd, but a humidifier add on to your machine can help.

also,i would suggest flonase, which is available at grocery stores or drug store. it's otc.

when you get the chance, please read the links in my sig below.

as has been suggested, please fill in your equipment profile. we do not all use the same machines or masks or combination of the two. once you fill that in, it will appear at the bottom of your post, as mine does here. this will help the experts here help you.

good luck!

And too much humidity when the local environment, climate, area is also very humid can cause congestion, cold symptoms, etc. Try not using it at all or lowering it and see if you need it at all.

If you live e.g. in Wash. state or N.Jersey, you may never need it!

Agree about experimenting with humidity. Never know till you try. Since your equipment is not listed yet, this may or may not be helpful, but if you are using a mask that sits across the bridge of your nose, a bad fit can push on the airways on the sides of the nose and feel stuffy and obstructed.

You might want to use a different mask. I looked at the one in your profile; that one seems to sit right on your nose.

You can look at the one in my profile. You'll see it's somewhat further away from the nostrils. You might want to try that one or a similar one.

That was addressed to the original poster. The mask (s)he has is almost like nasal pillows. Mine is a "vanilla" nasal mask. The air is not directly blow into the sinuses, even though the mask sits where it does.

I don't think he's chain smoking, chains are too hard for him to light! Jim

Maybe Whacky Tobacco, if someone would light it for him, maybe one of those International Visitors gave him a light. Jim
