CPAP machine accident

Post by nonetheless » Sun Jul 07, 2019 9:13 am

Hello All. My new Dreamstation Pro fell off my night stand onto the hardwood floor yesterday evening. The water chamber separated, which I reattached back into position) and a plastic panel below the air filter section had also popped open but I was able to press it back into shape. The Diagnostic Check under My Provider seems to show all working OK (Green Checkmark). Just wondering if this has happened to others and how sturdy these machines are?

Please don't let this happen again. Ideally the hose and ro electrical cord should detach when this is a danger, but not detach "too easily." Unfortunately, these are contradictory goals.

Same thing happened to me once, it fell off the night stand. Woke up to a crash! Nothing popped off except the water chamber came out and I had water all over the floor, last thing you want in the middle of the night. Ughhhh. I had gotten my arm mixed up in the hose, apparently, and when I rolled over the machine went flying. This was early on in my CPAP usage, still getting used to the whole thing. Fortunately no damage and lesson learned: place the hose carefully out of the way and don't mess with it!

The plastic case is designed to protect the innards against the occasional small drop.
As long as water has not gotten into the interior, most damage would be on the outside,
due to the design of the newest Dreamstations.
I presume it was pulled off by you struggling with the hose during the night.
A hose hanger might help.

Shortly after I received my machine ( a resmed aircurve) I pulled mine off the nightstand sometime in the night. I didn't hear and it it kept running. In the early morning I woke up disconnected my mask and still half asleep tripped over it. I picked it up upside down and all the water in the humidifier dumped all over the place. I am sure plenty of water got inside the machine. I was terrified. This expensive non paid for machine, I was sure would never work again. I picked it up dumped the water out. Cleaned it all and left it to dry with a fan running on it all morning. That afternoon I plugged it in and tried it out. It worked fine and has been working fine ever since.

I now have it sitting on a rubber dog mat that I found at petco, that way it doesn't slide off.

Here is a thread of pictures of things people have done to help. Things like keeping the machine in place, to hose management solutions to other things like taping your mouth if you are a mouth breather.

Another fa;se post by D.H., neither the hose or electrical cord are made to come off to prevent machines from being pulled off a table, that's a owner problem. Jim

I still encourage everyone to visit BDS's topic, I'll repost my pic here.

My device used to slide around on my table, I stuck some little rubber feet on the machine. Hasn't moved since.

If he's attached to the end in the drawer, either he is very small, or the night stand and bed are HUGE.

I have never fallen off a nightstand--ever.
But barstools are another story.

I keep my machine in the second drawerof a small cabinet, The machine can't be removed easily (or by accident). In the morning, I coil the hose into the drawer and close it. I put the mask in the top with my other supplies.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?
