CPAP Vs BIPAP Swallowing air

Post by jwesbrooks » Sat Jun 15, 2019 5:24 am

I have been on a CPAP machine for a little over a year and have noticed that I swallow air while using it. I have tried diff. sleeping positions and had the unit
adjusted down a little to try to prevent swallowing air. Still having issues with swallowing air.

Has anyone had similar problems and switched to BIPAP and had good results?

I use Resmed 10 and full mask.

Air swallowing seems to be pressure on inhale related problem so it is unlikely that switching to a BiPap but keeping the same inhale pressure would have much effect. The lower pressure on exhale might reduce the air swallowing during that part of the cycle but that is just speculation. You still would have the inhale cycle issue.

To get more information, try searching for Aerophagia as a topic as there has been quite a bit of discussion on the topic.

What are your current pressure settings now?
Are you using EPR? If so, at what setting?
If you aren't using EPR....turn it on because it will create a bilevel situation similar to a bilevel (bipap is a Respironics marketing term) machine.
