Auto Shutoff Stops Working After Mask & Hose Replacement

Post by CPAPblows » Wed Jun 12, 2019 9:54 am

So how do I restore the auto shutoff function on my Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset? It no longer works since I installed replacement gear from Apria.

Are the replacement mask and hose the same type as you had previously? Different size hoses and different mask styles will likely require setting changes

Verify SmartStart is still turned on (Clinical Mode)
Verify Mask type is set correctly (Full, Nasal or Pillows)
Verify Hose is set correctly, if not using ClimateLine (Standard, or SlimLine)(Clinical Mode)
Battery Backup: EcoFlow Delta 2

Auto start and auto shutoff work together. If start works so should shutoff. Change in gear should have made no difference.

Only, auto off is sensitive to the resistance of the circuit, if the flow resistance is too high, then auto off will think it's just a big leak, and not mask off. Even something like small pillows can be enough to fool it, not to mention a tube type being wrong.

The mask, elbow, and hose were the only items replaced. As far as I could tell, they were IDENTICAL to the previous items. Hoses were both slimline. I tried another elbow, and the still had the same symptoms. The new mask was placed open side up on the unit, as it was before the items were replaced. A similar unit did the same thing for a while after an equipment update, but then started shutting off as before. I tried toggling the autostart off and on, but that didn't help.

Could it be that I have to reboot the CPAP unit? Can't believe this is such an uncommon or elusive problem?!

Have you run mask fit?

Probably won't fix the problem, but you'll feel like you tried something else. ;-)

This could be a coincidence.
I just had a similar event on my same unit. I had a tear in a hose, so I replaced it.
At that point auto off stopped working, so I assumed it was related to the hose. I tried different hoses, verified all of the settings as noted in the above posts.
The auto on worked, but the auto off was not working.

The last nights I used the machine, I woke up gasping for breath, so I called the DME who told me to bring the machine in, as something was amiss.
His thought was that likely one of the sensors had failed. I am awaiting a repair now. You probably want to get the unit checked out to be sure.

Try unplugging from the wall socket electric source and then plug back in.
This will force the machine software to "reboot" so to speak. Similar to what we have to do when computers get a cobweb in them and act squirrelly.

And no...not a common problem when all we do is change hoses or masks.

Then after the reboot see if auto off works...2 tests....one with the mask attached to the long hose and the second if it doesn't work with you removing the mask while it is blowing (unhook it from the long hose) and see if it stops then.
If it doesn't stop with no mask attached then one of the sensors in the machine itself may be ailing.

Almost always, whenever you suspect something is wrong with an electronic device, unplug it, wait a bit then plug it back in.

Unless it's a life support system, then only do it if you're named as a beneficiary on the insurance.

Q. I have stopped therapy, but my device is still blowing air.

A. After therapy has stopped, your device will blow a small amount of air to avoid condensation in the machine and air tube. This will stop automatically after 20 minutes.
Don't mistake reduction in air flow for cool down mode function for not stopping.
Normal function of auto off is to....
Remove mask/hose and after 5 to 10 seconds the air flow gets reduced significantly but doesn't totally stop.
This is called cool down mode.
So it's normal for it to not stop totally but the air flow should drop significantly....when I have the problem with the machine and the P10 mask when I remove the mask...the air flow never reduces at all...it never enters cool down mode.

The reduction in air flow is significant and really can't be missed...it is a really low level of air flow moving through the hose...barely blowing. Totally unlike regular air flow even if a person was using 4 cm...because it's a lot less than 4 cm during cool down mode.
