New user-Help with settings please (Vauto)

Post by emcee13 » Sat Jun 08, 2019 2:52 pm

Summary:
-need help with settings for Resmed AirCurve 10 Vauto
-previously prescribed pressure 6 on AirSense 10

-sleep study with cpap, caught “head cold”
-2 tries after cold cleared, caused same intense nasal symptoms
-all uses with humidity
-this time around, what’s “safer”... humidity or none?

-using Airfit P10 for Her nasal pillows

Long version:
Thanks to some helpful members here I will be getting a ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto from Secondwind on Monday. I’m excited to start feeling better. I’ve been feeling so poorly for 3 years, but actually much longer. I chose the bipap as it was advised for my particular issues (mainly flow limitations, RERAs, a few OSAs and fewer centrals, Catathrenia, autonomic nervous system dysregulation/complex PTSD, weak LES/GERD). I do not have a sleep doctor anymore as I had 2 and neither were willing to work with me or help me when I struggled. So, I’m doing this on my own.

During my sleep study I was prescribed a pressure setting of 6 on an APAP. I need help with the settings for my current machine (ResMed VAuto) please. I’ll be using the Airfit P10 For Her nasal pillows.

Also, after my sleep study, about 4 days later, I developed a nasty head cold. I’m adverse to medications (or they are adverse to me!) so I rode it out for about 10 days unable to use my then prescribed machine (ResMed Airsense). The head cold started to clear so I tried the machine at home for the first time and it immediately gave me sneezing, congestion and a runny nose. Tried again a week later after it cleared and it was the same. This was all with humidity. Would it be safer to try with no humidity at first? I’m desperate for the machine to work for me and I don’t want my nose to react badly! The nasal issue caused me to be non-compliant, so I had to give the machine back. I’m ready to try again and succeed! I have to! My quality of life is non-existent right now.

Thank you for any and all help!!!

A few things: There's no "S10", it's just a "10", Aircurve 10 something", "Airsense 10 something". It's not a "bipap", because only Respironics makes "bipap". Resmed makes "aircurve" or "VPAP".

If you had a Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset with a pressure of 6 to something, then you'd program your VAuto to a minEPAP of... well, honestly, we need more information to program it properly...

Like a couple of screenshots from Oscar or Sleepyhead, to see how the previous machine was working.

What humidity setting are you using now and did you use when you were trying to use the AirSense 10 model?

Too little humidity or too much humidity will cause the symptoms you experienced. It's called "cpap rhinitis".

Humidity needs vary hugely among cpap users...heck even in the same household they can vary widely.
One person needs a lot of humidity to keep the nasal mucosa happy and the spouse might do better with minimal or even no added moisture.

When the nasal mucosa become unhappy with either too much or too little moisture they swell up and give you nasty cold like symptoms or allergy attack symptoms or sinus infection symptoms.

So let's start with whatever you are using now and change it to see what your nasal mucosa want in terms of moisture.
If using a relatively high setting for humidity....lower the setting.
If using a relatively low setting for humidity....increase the setting.
If using a middle of the road setting...toss a coin but if going by the odds most people will need more and not less.

I’m sorry I didn’t make it more clear that I do not have a cpap machine now, but will be receiving one in the mail on Monday. I used my previous machine twice and unfortunately/stupidly gave up, 18 months ago and no longer have the machine. I have no previous data and nothing to go by. I hope someone can help me with the initial settings as I am essentially a new user. Thank you!

Also, where you live relative to water and what season you're in make a difference... I never use it at all.

Ok, that makes a difference... so you're starting out fresh.

I'd say, set the machine up like this for the first night:

Mode: VAuto
MinEPAP: 6
MaxIPAP: 25
PS: 3
leave the rest of the settings at the default.

then post an oscar report after the first night, and we can start tuning.

Okay. Thank you! I’ll do that.
