Somestimes one DOES find a good DME!

Post by DanceDiva26 » Sun May 05, 2019 10:32 am

I know others have found good DMEs, but there are more stories of bad ones. I count myself lucky!

AHM was my DME for 3 months while on private insurance and they did well by me. I started on Medicare in July 2017, but alack and alas, AHM was not on their approved list. Only Apria, Lincare, and a few out of town outfits. I am not one to give up easily, but although I tried heroically to get ANY of those to service me...well...we all know how that went.

So, I bought supplies from Cpap.com and Amazon. Found great sales...my masks/cushions/pillows last a long time...no problem.

Recently, out of curiosity I checked back on Medicare's site...and Eureka!...AHM was back on the list!

Went to my sleep doc's nurse practioner on a Tuesday, showed her some SH data, and got an RX for supplies. Called AHM that Thursday, emailed my RX, and got my N30i kit plus other supplies 7 days later! Have had 2 orders now with the same ease, quickness, and professionalism! Received the P30i pillows yesterday.

I feel like a kid in a candy store! I'll be ordering something every month till I have backups for everything....as insurance in case AHM ever gets knocked off the list.

Keep checking back on the Medicare DME list if you're not happy w/ your DME... it changes!
*BTW- this is in central Ohio in case anyone wants more info.

I have used several different local DMEs.
ACS is my choice for local, insured service.
They are a mom-n-pop operation in this area, and covered by Medicare.
They have cheerfully obliged my every request.
Full data machines are readily available, and they will special order without complaint.
My sig (at the bottom) is a link to the Medicare provider directory.

I consider myself lucky not to have a DME, because with the HMO I have (and will probably stay with on Medicare) there's only ONE choice, and it's crapria. I may need a new machine by the time I reach Medicare age, and I will let Medicare help me pay for it. But I'll keep pretending I don't have coverage for supplies because the aggravation is not worth it!

You got me curious since I will need to register for Medicare in a few months. The only CPAP supplier they list here is Lincare. I already fired them once!

Sadly, the Medicare list may not be complete or current, depending on where you are.
The best tactic is to find who you like in your area, and contact Medicare directly.
There may be updates overdue . . .
The list for here contains companies that do not carry cpap, and some that only supply nursing homes.
The competitive bid mess is a total cluster--hopefully, it will go away soon.
Medicare is less than perfect, but "Advantage" plans have big trade-offs for the low premiums.
EDIT---Also, advanced search can widen your range--increase the radius of your search.

I use Lincare, not a good DME, but I can stand them, much worse ones out there!
