Old but new, yeah I know sounds crazy

Post by FtStWUaCGBtS » Wed Apr 17, 2019 2:07 pm

Hi everyone

I'm FtStWUaCGBtS. I figured the whole thing would be kinda overly LARGE. Stands for, Fall to Sleep then Wake Up and Can't Fall Back to Sleep. Also fits me to a tee.

Let me back up. I've had Apnea since my mid thirties. Everybody knew it, but that was in the bad old days when Apnea, and needing CPAP were often referred to by Insurance mostly as Satanic, cult worship, and evil behavior of people who were not quite right. Even my own Family Doc, and especially my Endocrinologist thought so too. It took me a number of years to finally get a test, and surprise surprise I was having on average 164 goofs an hour, and ended up needing a pressure of 17 to get me on track. Probably preaching to a lot of choir here, but the exhaustion went away, the having to go P every 20 minutes stopped, and wonder of wonder a lot of joint pains just stopped. Crazy what getting some Oxygen to those parts will help. I really don't remember but I think I was 46 when I first finally got a test, and they got me on the right path, so about 10 years that I knew, but couldn't get the Docs to agree with me. They all kept saying get your Blood Sugars in check, and we'll talk about it. I always found that the funniest part, my A1c was 7 or below by that time. Today if you tell a Doc you need better sleep, first thing you get an Rx for a study.... Front line medicine it is, no mumbo jumbo about it anymore, no witchcraft at all. I kinda feel vindicated in a left handed sort of way.

So I got treated. I guess my first Doc did Ok, as I was like a new Man in a matter of 2 weeks. Since I have been through a number of Docs, they start out interested, and Ok, but I guess I bore them as I'm awesome on paper, but I felt I was slipping, and not doing as good as I had been. Take me to 64, and now my name here is my life. Get in bed, right to sleep like always. Almost 4 hours to the minute and up to P. For me that has been a norm for some time. Problem is now, I'm wide awake, and nothing except waiting until I actually feel tired and then I can fall back asleep. That is only a problem if you want to have a life, because most of the time the second sleep comes on around 5:30 to 7AM.

Young, VERY smart Family Doc I have now perked up when I finally told him about it. He said whats your sleep Doc say about it. Well my sleep guy had gotten to the age when he had enough $$$$$ so he is on the vacation every other week thing right now, and my last 3 appointments had been rescheduled..... We, my new Wonder Doc and I, got me a new sleep Doc..... I had always had Pulmonary Docs for my sleep stuff, this new guy looks like Dooogie Houser. I so wanted to ask him if his Mom knew he was at work, instead of in kindergarten. so young, and he is a "Jon" not John mind you. He is also a Neurologist. Because my Family Doc thinks this isn't driven by my lungs, but he won't say it's all in my head, because he knows I am serious about this sleep stuff. So I guess it's all in my nerves, neural pathways.....

New Doc checked me all out, and pronounced me fit to sleep. Asked me about my equipment. I am currently using a Respironics System 1, which is around 6 years old, use a water bath heater, and the heated tube. I use a Respironics Fit Life Mask, which is a TOTAL face mask, and being a pretty dedicated back sleeper keeps my tiny little nose intact. Every other mask I have tried has either about blown my head off with, my 17 worth of pressure, or about wore my nose off my face. I clean it regularly, and replace items on a sensible schedule.

The current plan is new machine, first because he feels 6 years is about 2 years too old, never had heard that wisdom before. Then he also wants me on APAP, because he thinks I am over driving my current 17. When I do get up, with this feeling awake. I am good, but only IF I sit upright, trying to lie back in the recliner, even to just read causes me some gasping. I am not a gasper

So I'm thinking of a Respironic Air Sense Auto, probably will stick with my Fit Life, I can say I have never had a leak issue, probably because I am a back sleeper. Love that mask design.

Thoughts, questions, similar experiences. Actually I hope others have had this wake, and no more sleep thing, just so I don't feel as weird about it. If so what worked for you. I really think I have tried all the Mom's remedies, and pretty much all else, but hey, everyone has a different experience, so maybe someone had this, and something made it better. I'd be willing to try things..

Anyhow, greetings to all. You may have noticed I am a bit windy. All I can say is sorry.

Welcome to the forum.

Respironics doesn't make the AirSense model machines....ResMed does...but yes...the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet would be an excellent machine to get.
Respironics similar model would be called the DreamStation Auto CPAP...model number DSX500xxx.

What are you thoughts on a Dodge Mustang, or Ford Corvette?

Welcome.

I am fairly new to this whole cpap stuff and learning more every day. I am opposite of you in I can't get to sleep. Once I am asleep I usually sleep till morning but it can be from 10 or 11 pm to 6 am or from 2 am to 6 am. I have read other people here who have your same form of insomnia and wake up and can't go back to sleep. Hopefully they will chime in with some suggestions. :).

Hi Everyone

Hope I didn't cause any of you any gas.

Granny

Yes as a matter of fact I did read the page you note, at least until I fell asleep, Yada yada yada. I'm not sure if it was 15 Sentences, or 3 minutes.

I transposed my whatevers when I said Respironics, Air Sense. I once did have a Resmed machine, the wonderful Woman to whom I am married these last 38 years gave me an ultimatum at the end of week one. She said, and not eloquently at all, get that &%^&*#^ helicopter noise sounding Piece of (^&**( out of my bedroom, or you get out, or I just leave. Not wanting the last 2, I got another Respironics machine. Marital harmony resumed. So I am not looking to get back in that boat.

So Respironics DreamStation in auto, and no thank you, I did a lot of looking around at what is out there, and already feeling respironics machines have done me well, plan to stay with one.

Thanks for what you seemingly do here, looks like your name is on a lot of info. Also for reminding me I had twisted my conjunctives or something, with the Resmed/Respironics I think it would be less problematic if one of them gave up the Res part, Maybe swap it for Sleep. Yeah SleepMed sounds good. Sleepironics is kinda hard to say though.

For all of you Truck guys I have a 99 Chebbie 1500K with low miles. It doesn't snow that much here where I can't get out in the car. It can, and has towed a FORD down the road 2 times. It just hits the road most of the time now to pick up lumber for my woodworking addiction.

"Dodge Mustang, or Ford Corvette?" It's pretty clear we have a heavily sleep deprived population here, maybe you ought to try this here CPAP stuff. I think you just put a pinch tween yer cheek, and gum, and you are good to go.

babydinosnoreless

I think with time that sleep will catch up with you, was a time I would go to sleep, and strangely enough stay awake for a pretty long time, and it didn't seem to bother me. As a matter of fact I kinda looked forward to that part of the day.

Seriously, hope sleep finds you, falling out has never been a problem, never thought about not sleeping untill I HAD to get up, would find me though.

Guilty  I also laughed a little, but then I quickly realized that it isn't cool, so I stopped myself from saying anything. And SleepMed was a good idea, but unfortunately the domain name is already taken...yes, I looked it up

You get which brand you want. But for others considering brands and reading this thread, the noise ratings of the current machines with heated humidifiers are:

Philips Respironics DreamStation Auto CPAP Machine - 27.9 dBA

ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet CPAP Machine - 26.6 dBA

The dBa rating sdoesn't tell you everything. because even though the ResMed is only a little quieter (bearing in mind that dB is a logarithmic scale), the *tone* of the ResMed machine is less objectionable to me...

Nearly always suggested. Never try to sleep on your back.

I get a lot of events, and not much productive sleep when I lay on my back. My spine and neck like it when I lay on my back, but I must focus on not laying on my back when trying to sleep.

My next mask will be an F-20 full face mask with a chin strap.
