weight gain

Post by barnesmic » Mon Apr 15, 2019 7:40 am

First time poster. I have been using a cpap for a month now. It works great. I have good nights and some not so good. Overall it is working. My sleep is better. My blood pressure and pulse rate have gone down considerably. One thing I have noticed. Does a CPAP cause weight gain. I haven't done anything to my diet as far as eating. I walk every day. If anyone can provide insight. I would appreciate it.

No, if anything it should do the opposite... look at your diet, exercise alone is not the answer now as we used to think it was.

It's hard to imagine how breathing all night long and getting oxygen to your heart, brain, and muscles could cause weight gain.

How much did you gain in what period of time?

As sleeping with cpap gives you more and more energy, you are obliged to use this energy to exercise.

The most logical cpap-related “blame” I can suggest may be related is that part of the population eats less when depressed, and depression is commonly reduced when one gets proper sleep. Long-term sleep deprivation even without oxygen issues isn’t known for improving one’s mood

I found it made me feel so much better to GET a good night's sleep, I wanted to eat more.

Had to really work on NOT doing that.

Of course, exercise is for health, not weight control, for most people. A lot of people that have dietary problems (problems with their diets like how much, when, and what) simply eat more when they're exercising, because they're hungrier and well, they're exercising so they can eat more. Yes, if you exercise and eat the same as you were eating before starting exercising, you're going to lose some weight, but that's not what happens too many times.

Never mind...back to the original question, no, I don't think that cpap itself causes weight gain, one has to look elsewhere for why one might be gaining weight after starting on cpap. I've been a ketogenic person for a couple of years now, but until I started on cpap I didn't have the energy to go out and figure out how I could make dietary changes that I could live with and that would last. Also started an exercise program a few months after starting cpap that I've stuck to for several years now. While I feel that's affected my health positively, I don't think that it has had much direct effect on my weight. Exercise does affect my blood pressure and pulse rate, though, I like that part *smile*.

I turned into a human vacuum cleaner for food once I was dialed in on my therapy. I have to take great pains to control what, when, and how much I eat, because if I don't, I'm just going to hoover everything.

Does a CPAP cause weight gain?
Only if you are carrying it when you step on the scales.

I might be able to help.

Im 58. And i walk everyday too, or swim or bike.

IMHO processed carbs are often the problem.

Not to say go on an Atkins diet immediately.

But fill up on these foods: Fruit (yes, eat all you want) oatmeal, protein, beans, oatmeal, ......you get the idea.

Me too, but the OP said there was NO change in diet.
I haven't done anything to my diet as far as eating.
So food intake does NOT explain the weight gain. I was trying to address the OP's concerns.

I gained about 5 pounds since I started cpap. I guess my diet could be better. Increase my cardio too to get my heart rate up to burn fat. I was just seeing if there was a correlation.

There was a small study done awhile back regarding weight gain and CPAP. The information possibly suggests that a small amount of gain is actually beneficial because it is most likely lean body mass muscle instead of fat. Here's the abstract of the study:

I think I'm fairly deep into this subject. (Having been obese at one point in life, now just a few pounds away from being a normal weight.) Excess calories cause weight gain. You can absolutely control your calorie intake if you have a bit of self control and an app. (It matters less about which specific app and more about how consistently you use it.) If you don't have one already, do yourself a favor and buy a cheap digital kitchen scale to weigh the food you eat.

Without having self control and an app and just depending on your ghrelin/leptin hormones? ("appetite") Studies say you'll probably gain weight after you add a CPAP into your life. (But the data is marginal, maybe/maybe not.)

All the more reason to grasp ahold of your future and do what you want with it, nobody else is going to make you. Just don't forget that having extra weight causes an increased risk for all-cause mortality. (https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2 ... 084002.htm)

same here, I gained about 40lbs since starting cpap therapy.
and actually eating less than before.
my theory so far is that I was waking up drenched in sweat before the cpap machine, so I probably had a good night's exercise every night.
now the nights are more relaxed.
