Newb with Trouble Installing SleepyHead

Post by Amishboy51 » Sun Mar 17, 2019 6:28 pm

[Okay, I previously posted this on the Apnea Board, but there’s been no response in 3+ days, so if someone here can provide some really basic info, it’d be much appreciated.]

Sorry for my incompetence; I've been attempting to install Sleepyhead 1.1.0 on my Mac, but I'm unable to understand the installation directions.

I'm trying to follow the "Beginner's Guide to Installing Sleepyhead," which says that after downloading, it should open as a "Volume." Then you drag the icon to the Applications folder; after it's copied, drag it to the Dock for launching.

Well, I manage to download Sleepyhead for Mac; then I see a white box, with a sheep wearing a CPAP in the upper left, and the words SleepyHead beneath it. Is this a "volume"?

I can drag it to the Applications folder, but I'm unable to drag it to the Dock. However, if I double-click on Sleepyhead in the Applications folder, it now appears in the Dock. Same thing?

Finally, when I open the Sleepyhead app, I get a "Select Profile" box, with Sleepmeister and my name (open), etc. Can anyone take me though these steps?

Thanks in advance
======================

And, upon further review, it appears that I've apparently installed SleepyHead.

However, rather than now being asked to "create" a profile, I have profiles already listed for myself and Sleepmeister (probably because I installed SleepyHead previously, even though I never figured out how to use it?).

Anyway, I'm unable to input anything with the keyboard, including "Search," or to select my Profile; the Select Profile box just seems to be frozen.

Things to try:

In SleepyHead Preferences:
  • Import Tab / Turn off Automatically load last used profile on start-up
  • Restart SleepyHeady
  • Create new profile
In SleepyHead Preferences:
  • Appearance TAB / Change Graphics Engine
  • Try both Desktop OpenGL and Software Engine
Consider deleting profile directories manually.
  • In finder, browse to Documents / SleepyHeadData-master / Profiles
  • Remove Profile Directories

That's not uncommon on Apnea Board to post a question and get no replies. I've seen it/experienced it many times! - - Hang out here on CPAPTalk Amishboy and the guys/gals here will get things sorted out for you. It's hard to understand why this difference in the forums exists, but it does...

Welcome to the forum and good luck resolving your issue with Sleepyhead!
It is because of the type of people who have gravitated to this forum. These are the best.

Maybe I've just looked at the more active threads, where someone says "hi, I have this problem" then 10 people welcome them, six give various bits of wrong information, and then the moderator closes the thread due to it wandering off topic.

Honestly, I'd try using sleepyhead 1.0, it's been available for a long time, and while not perfect, is more 'tried and true' at this point.

Hmmmm.... On my PC, I've been using 1.1?_unstable version I believe... I'm not aware of any problems with it, are you??? I mean, it does make my charts look whacko, but I think that's because I keep changing my variables!

Should I switch to 1.0? I realize this is probably a moot point because OSCAR is due out pretty soon...
I actually hope they *fix* some things in oscar before going public... make it better, not just sleepyhead with the serial numbers filed off.

If 1.1 is working (enough) for you, then stick with it if you want.

My comment was for amishboy51 for whom 1.1 isn't working at all.

On a recent thread about CPAPTalk being better than Apnea Board, here's what the "leader" of Apnea Board had to say... I guess he's preaching to the choir, huh Amishboy? - - It didn't take them more than ignoring you for 3+ days to figure this out!!!

Once again, welcome to CPAPTalk!!! :D
Hrmph, even when they banned me for making a joke about how strict the moderators were, I didn't rag on them THIS much.... I don't think.

I don't think Apnea Board has been "ragged-on" at all! A new person (amishboy51) joined this forum after getting treated poorly on Apnea Board; he asked for help there and got no help whatsoever! It is clear he gave them plenty of time to help him... 3+ days!!!

And frankly, I hadn't even seen Supersleeper's snide comment about "staying away from Apnea Board" until this evening.... really?!?! His "style" does not impress me at all!

So, I think it serves the community well to know how people are being treated on Apnea Board and how Apnea Board's "leader", Supersleeper, feels about their lackluster service. - - Thankfully, the owner of CPAPTalk has provided a quality forum with a great team (Palerider, Pugsy, Zonker, Okie Bibap, etc...) who are helping people with their Sleep Apnea issues. :)
Oh, it's been ragged on, and we're ragged on over there, sort of, since you can't SAY 'cpaptalk' over there, since it's in their dirty word filter.

But, I'm very glad that apneaboard exists, for two reasons, they've got the clinical manuals (and official software), and second, they're a great place to send people who're too delicate to be able to tolerate criticism... a 'safe place' as it were.

First off, my apologies for any comments that were critical of Apnea Board, or any that were taken critically.

In sum, I received a response that allowed me to finish downloading and installing SleepyHead.

Second, thanks to Dog Slobber, KnightSleeper, Palerider, and Jimbud for their very fast and informative responses. I'll try to figure out how to view and analyze the data, but no promises.

My apologies for failing to acknowledge you by name, Jas_williams. I didn't realize that you were also on this forum, and I didn't want to unknowingly violate some rule about "cross-posting" or something.

I'll read (and re-read) the sticky, and check in again after that.

We're pretty laid back about that over here, we recognize that there are other good sources of info on the net :D

No need for the acknowledgement just glad to help you move forward

The two sites Apneaboard and cpaptalk are very different with Apneaboard tightly moderated this one only lightly moderated but there are good folks for helping people on both sites. Just stick with where you feel comfortable, my advice is read all you can and learn and ask questions.
