Distilled water

Do you have to use distilled water or will tap water do?

You can use any drinkable water in the machine. Distilled water is recommended because it does not leave mineral deposits in the water chamber. The mineral deposits can be removed my using a diluted vinegar solution, or with lemon juice. Any mild acid will dissolve the mineral deposits.

Seconding what Okie said... distilled is for the dubious convenience of not having to clean out mineral deposits occasionally.

As already stated, you can use any potable water, but distilled water is best.

However, do not use carbonated, flavored, or colored water.

When I got my machine I used distilled water just for the easy clean up of sediment.

A few weeks ago I ran out of distilled and decided to go with normal tap water, just to see how much sediment would accumulate.

I'm not seeing any.

The amount of mineral build up will vary depending on your city water supply. We have lived in some areas where the municipal water is very hard, and other places where it isn't.

I have found it's worth using distilled water because there is basically no cleaning to do. Tap water leaves a lot of buildup in the tray and those trays are not necessarily very easy to clean out!

Vinegar just dissolves the buildup.

Been out of distilled water and forgetting to jot it down on grocery list :x so I have to do a vinegar soak every few days. Amazing how quickly so much matter is deposited on the walls and base of the tank. 20 mins straight vinegar, scrub with paper towel, rinse. I wash just in case bugs might have survived .

I use distilled - it's only a $1 per gallon, and we use it in our iron as well. When I forget I use filtered water (from our fridge filter). I avoid tap water because I don't want to inhale chloramine (what my municipality uses) treated water all night long. Chloramine treated water seems to irritate my nose and throat a lot more than chlorine treated, or even untreated water.

Believe me, you will over time. I neglected to clean mine for too long and basically trashed the water container.

I didn't say anything about no longer cleaning it, I said I switched from distilled to tap.

That's what a vinegar soak is for.

I use Reverse Osmosis water for drinking and in my CPAP.
It works for me and I replace my Humidifier chamber every year or 2 weather I need to or not instead of washing it.On rare occasions, I may swish a little water in it.
