Very Grateful for my new ResMed ASV

Post by beautifuldreamer » Wed Feb 20, 2019 11:48 am

I am so grateful that Kaiser Sleep Doctor was able to get my 3 year old Philips Respironics ASV replaced with the ResMed ASV - I find the algorithm of the ResMed so much easier to sleep with and it is so much quieter. My average AHI for my first 30 days with the ResMed ASV has been .49 - with a few 0 AHI nights.

{With the Respironics, my overall average was 3.63, and some nights it would spike up as high as 10 or 12 or even more . . .and a friend recently commented that my ASV was much quieter than a few years ago when we shared a hotel room}

indeed! while mine isn't asv, what i have, in my opinion, has really made a difference in sleep apnea treatment.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

very grateful for the Resmed ASV, too. it responds fast enough to help clean up my weird breathing problems.

Can you explain how ASV is different from CPAP?

The cpap provides a constant pressure.

The ASV monitors your breathing, breath by breath, and if your tidal volume starts to decrease, which typically happens before a central apnea, it increases pressure support to maintain your tidal volume at (iirc) at least 85% of the last few minutes rolling average TV, it can give up to 25cm pressure on an individual inhale to force air into you.

Is that different from my ResMed airsense 10 which adjusts pressure according to my need at any specific moment?

Very different, the Resmed airsense 10 responds after an event has occurred and will only treat obstructive apnoea, hypopnoea, snores and flow limitations. An ASV will treat clear airway apnoea before they happen by looking at each and every breath, that’s why they cost so much.

Your airsense 10 (autoset?) does *NOT* adjust pressure according to your needs at any specific moment.

It raises pressure *after* you've had an event, over a period of many minutes.

The ASV response *on the same breath*.

So then ASV is really for people who have more Central apnea than obstructive or hypopnea? ResMed says my central apneas are only .8 per hour... Would that make me a candidate for ASV or no?

Out of curiosity what was the deciding factor for you to get a prescription for an ASV in the first place versus a bipap or apap?

bipap or apap?
"Bipap" is a Philips Respironics trademark for a BILEVEL machine.

ASV is a TYPE of bilevel machine.
