Phillips Dreamstation Service Required - I am on vacation!

I am in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale getting ready to go on a cruise this Sunday.

Last night I tried to use my Phillips Dreamstation. It popped up with "Service Required 050117-00318".

I have searched the internet and cannot figure out what is wrong. I called Phillips but they had just closed.

I did notice that there was some water in the bag I was transporting the CPAP in. I have tried drying the machine, removing any water from it that I can see.

I have unplugged the machine and plugged it back in several times. Within 30-45 seconds I get that horrible beeping and then the error pops up.

Have a bad feeling that I am screwed. Why wife is not to happy, as I snore without my CPAP. Don't want to ruin her vacation.

Does anyone have any advice?

Check the local Craig's list for a used machine. You may just luck out and find what you need at a reasonable price.

The situation you present seems very difficult to solve. These thoughts are not based on experience except for number 3 below. You will have to follow the "pick any two" paradigm of "Cheap/Fast/Good."

I assume you are in Miami far away from your home. Therefore,

1) FAST/GOOD: see if you can call your provider and get their answering service to get through to your provider group. They in theory can fax or PDF your prescription to a DME in the Miami area where you can pick up your type of CPAP with your settings (this will cost you plenty though).

2) CHEAP/FAST: Not ideal, but if in an emergency type of situation, check out Craig's list in the Miami area for your type of CPAP (your model hopefully) and purchase it (taxi to the owner's home) as it seems that most of these Craig's list CPAPs are around $500 or less (Craig's list is littered with dozens of CPAP devices b/c they are so unpleasant and people quit). You should be able to get a mask and hose from a medical supply pharmacy in Miami. Or buy some bleach and soak the mask and hose that came with the Craig's list CPAP in a strong bleach solution of warm water for about 30 minutes. Rinse and dry. Not ideal but you are in a jam. You will need to know how to set your pressures though. Learn how on this site if not already known. This option is not the safest but it is one way to get a CPAP w/o a prescription when the "fit has hit the shan" but you need to know what you are doing.

3) FAST/CHEAP: This option is to go to a medical pharmacy or regular pharmacy and buy one or more of those hot-water moldable mouthpieces that fit over your teeth and have a fixed hinge point on the lower part that thrusts/keeps your lower jaw forward so your airway stays open. This may not be ideal depending on your medical situation but it is low cost ($80 or less) and should be available nearby. Your jaw (TMJ) may be sore in the morning but if it keeps the peace in your stateroom it is worth it. You have at least an argument with your stateroom partner that you tried everything you could to rectify this situation and the mouthpiece was the best option available under the time constraints.

4) If your medical condition is severe and the above solutions do not pan out or work out, then skip the cruise as your health/life is much more important than a cruise. I assume your condition is something you have lived with for years like most of us and this is not a crisis as a few more days of sub-optimum treatment is not going to make things worse especially if "snoring" is the main concern here. Possibly the humidifier water you mentioned leaked into your circuit board area. Get a screwdriver or other tool needed and open up the guts of your CPAP and use a hair dryer to blow into the circuit board area until it is obvious that no water is inside. The short circuiting caused by water infiltration may be resolvable once your own CPAP is dry again.

Note that many adults drink a fair amount of alcohol on a cruise (totally expected) and such usage tends to increase the laxity of the airway (snore/AHI more) at least try wearing a mouthpiece if nothing else.

Good luck with this situation. Let us all know how you solved it if you would. This must happen fairly often as these potential solutions apply to a lost/stolen CPAP situation too

You could try using a hair dryer to blow warm air into the air intake..not too close. See if that will dry out the machine in case the problem is from the water. Try calling these people...might not be available on Saturday..https://acbio.com/

I'm not sure if this will help, but it's from the Service Manual.
There's a whole section with error codes, but I couldn't find anything that coincides with what you've listed.



Service Required

Safe State
Indicates an error which enters device into “Safe State.”
This allows power to remain on but airflow is disabled.

Device error.
Press Control Dial to silence alert.
Disconnect device from power. Reattach power cord to restore power.
If the alert continues to occur, retrieve possible error codes and troubleshoot
for possible failure.
