Which mask for first try?

Post by sleepyheadct » Wed Feb 13, 2019 6:46 pm

So I decided to try the apap route since all of the other treatments for moderate OSA sound kind of iffy. I have found some machines with data logging but I am confused what kind of mask to try, a full mask, a nasal thing, etc. I suppose there is likely some trial and error but is there any kind that tends to be better for a beginner to try than others? also the machines generally don't come with a mask I think you have to buy it separately?

Yes...masks are usually separate purchase.

Question for you...do you normally breathe through your nose just fine most of the time or do you have chronic nasal congestion issues that you can't get cleared up and you just have to breathe through your mouth?

Answer that question and then we can come up with some ideas closer to what you might need.

I don't think I've noticed any nasal problems other than having to blow my nose if allerfies or cold are acting up

I would suggest that you start by looking at some of the nasal interface masks...either cushion or nasal pillows.

You only really need a full face mask when you can't breathe through your nose and you just have to mouth breathe for some reason.
Full face masks are larger and heavier and there's just more real estate touching your face that needs to maintain a seal.
Nasal interface masks have smaller foot print on your face and less area touching the skin that needs to stay sealed.

Go here and take a stroll through the various masks and see what looks interesting to you and read the reviews.

Take a look at the mask I have in my equipment profile. It's about as next to nothing as a person can have on their face.

Oh...if you have facial hair...by all means look at nasal masks...people with facial hair can use full face masks but it extra hard work to keep the seal intact.

I started with full face - but learned quickly to shut my mouth lol and like pugs said, a smaller lighter footprint seems best.

I myself love the Airfit P-10 and can't seem to find a replacement to get me away from it.

The mask seem to be key to this therapy , when you find the right one - you will know it. Try a bunch when you are at your DME supplier, if it does not work out for you they will let you exchange it usually. Sometimes you will find deals here on the forum or other places online for second hand / sealed in packaging masks etc
