At Home Test...APAP

Post by jpenn727 » Wed Feb 06, 2019 3:20 pm

Hi All,

This is a great forum and I've learned so much in the past month. Thank you all.

I have undiagnosed sleep apnea, but I have an at-home test coming the mail any day. Can I assume that all at-home tests should result and Auto CPAP Machine being prescribed? Because the sleep study was not done in a clinical environment a technician could not titrate different pressures to ensure proper programming of a traditional non auto CPAP machine.

I would not make that assumption, instead I would be proactive in requesting a ResMed Airsense 10 Autoset or aAutoset for her.

The next step depends on your insurance and your doctor. There are three possible outcomes: (1) Issue an APAP machine and forgo the titration study. (2) Issue an adjustable machine for a set period of time to try to determine your needed pressure, then issue you a CPAP machine. (3) Schedule you for a titration study to determine which type of machine to issue to you.

The sleep test will determine if you have sleep apnea or not. If you have sleep apnea (hope you don't!), go ahead and get the autoset machine. Set the lower setting at 6 or 7 and the upper setting at 20. Monitor your readings every day. You may have to tinker with the lower setting, but give it time. Report back here. We'll help you.

I done the "at home" sleep study. Twice. The first time I got aggravated ( well, mad ) at the thing for alarming me every 30 minutes when a sensor went off.......Tore up the finger thingy and had to wait on a replacement. Which worked, so it was bad it appears. So, know that the test procedure is almost complicated. Don't expect a good nights sleep. But....it appears that it worked well enough. I was given good equipment and it has all helped a LOT. Deal with the test as best you can. I got just over 3 hours on it, but that was enough.

I'm sure that no one here really wants to use a CPAP machine, but I'm so excited to get one so I can get a good night sleep. I also want to control my snoring so my wife doesn't have to leave the room and sleep in the guest bedroom. That is easy to do if you're at home, but if we go on a vacation you can't leave your hotel room - she would be trapped. It's an awful feeling knowing that I'm disturbing her sleep too.

Compared to how I used to "sleep", yes, I really want to use my cpap.
