Mask for African American male
Mask for African American male
Does any company make a full face mask for an African American face? The F-20 is not to bad, but even the large is not a great fit. Don't like nasal pillows. Starting to wake up with a headache most mornings. AHI at 5.0 most of the time.

Re: Mask for African American male
I have not heard of any race-specific masks. Certain masks are known to better accomodate certain facial features. What aspect of your facial structure is your mask not working well with, or where is your F20 not fitting? Someone may have experience with your same issue.

Re: Mask for African American male
Thanks for the help, like most African American male my nose is wide. Most of the full face mask marketed are not large enough for me. I'm sure there is a number of male or female that have this issue. Wide bridge so the top will not fit tight. Is the main thing. Lots of leaks, unless I wear it so tight it leave a mark.

Have you considered a Dreamwear full face ? These are not like wearing a nasal pillows at all. But don't have the problems with sealing around your nose bridge.

Perhaps a mask like the PR Dreamwear or ResMed F30 that seals under the nose. Or just a nasal mask.

This is what I would suggest - go to cpap.com and click on cpapmasks tab. On the left side of the screen you'll see a list of filters, click on "wide face." I scrolled through them a bit and it does look like some of them are wider in the nose area. They may be able to help you choose one if you call them, too.

Re: Mask for African American male
The African American nose tends to be flatter and wider than the "average" American nose. However, there are others in the population who share that feature.

Isn't that exactly what Muddpa explained?

Hi Muddpa ~~~
Do you open your mouth with the mask and that's why you want a full face?
... or do you just not like the idea of nasal pillows?
I love my dreamwear nasal cushion (not pillows) and it has a Xwide nose option ... and it is sooooooooooo
comfortable! No hose hanging off your face to get tangled up in
I also use retainers as a bite guard which makes keeping my mouth closed easy peasy.
The frame itself also comes in a large size.

Re: Mask for African American male
Was thinking of some of the full face masks that are a hybrid, like the Quattro, and have nothing across the bridge of the nose. However, they use nasal pillows along with covering the mouth, and if you don't like nasal pillows, that may not work for you. Not sure what it is you don't like about the pillows. If you tried to use some that weren't well fitted, you may not have had an optimal experience. Too small a size can feel stiffling like there's not enough air. Also can cause leaks, and to have air blowing that close is disconcerting. With a well fitting set of pillows I don't even feel the air. I don't turn the machine on till the mask is securely in place. Nasal pillows masks are not all created equal. I use strictly nasal pillows because every mask I've tried across the bridge of my nose closes off my sinuses. Yet there are some pillows masks that simply will not seal for me. If your issue is clautrophobia, that's another issue. Not trying to steer you towards pillows, just suggesting that your experience thusfar may not be definitive, and you might want to revisit it if the other efforts don't work out.

Thanks everyone for your response and help. I tried the Dreamweaver, as long as I don't lay on my side it ok. But I am a side sleeper. I will look at the F30.
