Hi,
I just had my annual review in London (NHS hospital) and the technicians gave me a different new mask this time. I discovered that when I got home. I have always had a nasal mask but this is a small full-face mask. I am wondering if I will get used to it in the next few days or if I should ditch it.
In the first night, Sleepyhead reports a higher AHI figure (5.11 instead of 1.14), all other figures higher too, average leak rate 10.95 (was 2.83). The mask is difficult to fit but I did play around until it was almost silent, but every time I moved in the night, the mask needed to be readjusted. I read that there is a risk of overtightening it. I find the clips awkward to undo, because it means forcing hard plastic - I don't suppose they will break, but I don't like it.
Last winter I bought myself a Simplus full face mask because I thought it would be good if I have a cold and can't breathe. It was absolutely fine but I only used it a few times - however, I could use it full-time.
The Amara is said to have advantages - no marks on the face (but I have got used to that), lets you read in bed - I have given up reading in bed since I was diagnosed in 2010, and I can't imagine doing it with this mask because every movement would require a readjustment.
Has anyone got any suggestions of how I can get on better with the mask? I think I should try it for a couple more nights before I give up on it and (try to) report to the hospital.

Re: New mask Amara View
The Amara View was my mask during my first attempt at using cpap. I never got used to it and failed compliance and my insurance stop paying for the rental. I was able to get another shot after a year and now have a nasal mask. I think part of the problem is that your nose is not fully enclosed like a nasal mask and only a little movement can break fhe seal, if you were fine with the nasal mask i say stick with it. You may also want to ask the clinic why you were switched.Zeppa wrote:Hi,

Re: New mask Amara View
@Jerseyguy - Thanks, that makes sense and explains my problems. I nearly left it unopened, but after reading about all the advantages claimed, I thought I should try it. I can see myself contacting them on Monday.

Re: New mask Amara View
Actually, this afternoon I was so tired I went to bed for an hour, and this time I held the mask further away from my face and probably looser at the beginning (the booklet says people often have problems because they fit it too tight) and it seemed to work really well. So maybe it will be fine after all - I will see tonight.
