Respiratory Rate Sleepyhead

Post by garyjack » Mon Jan 07, 2019 1:24 pm

Hello Everyone. My first post and hoping for a little help if possible. I have been on apap since September and it is going ok. Have altered settings a few times in the quest for the best AHI and quality of sleep. Fatigue is improved (not eliminated) and AHI is about 0.7 overall. I have sleepyhead in order to assess the data. I have attached a couple of screen shots with reference to the respiratory rate. It appears when the machine runs at a higher pressure I have spikes of erratic respiration throught the night. However when at a lower pressure these spikes are all but eliminated. Any help in interpreting this would be appreciated.

I wish sh didn't have the RR chart, it just serves to confuse the issue.

Looking at the breathing in detail would give more info.

You need to zoom in real close on the respiration rate to really see what might be happening....breath by breath zooming...like this
I picked the biggest spike in rate....it means nothing. Maybe a dream or something. Respiration rate is best just ignored.
Like PR I wish SleepyHead didn't even report it because it means nothing and we can't do a damn thing about it anyway.
Just causes unneeded stress in people.

Sh error, turn on the zero line, count real breaths. When you have some irregularities in the breathing, sh has a pro Lem where it counts every cross of the zero line as another breath, even if it's not.

Again, just ignore it.

Hey PR....how do we turn on the 0 line when it isn't showing up? I can't find it but then my 0 line shows up.

And is this maybe elevated RR because of the cardiac echo thing? The numbers work out to be about right for cardiac echo.

Right click on the "flow rate" label, then dotted lines, it's under there

Fwiw my RR on sleepyhead is always fast. I've spent a significant amount of time trying to understand and investigate it and address it and saw several doctors about it.

My .02 that if you don't have a known respiratory illness ignore it. Spikes are likely an intense moment in a dream or while you're changing positions while you sleep.

Thank you for tacking a label on it,

Whether I remember that, (much less how to spell it) remains to be seen.

Thanks from me too. And I know I won't remember the long official name to it...I do good to remember "cardiac echo effects".
I wish I had the link to Dave's explanation to it and why it can be ignored but I don't have it handy and I just don't feel like looking for it.
Having a bad day today...really bad in several ways....my mom and my back. Crap.

It's in my search history now. So if you forget, PM me. :)

Thanks Jay. I've seen this in my flow rate chart with EPR off when using a full face mask. It's great to have the correct search term! :)

Here's a link to a discusion by Dave (Delta Dave, Muffy, Not Muffy), -SWS(another heavy hitter), and a couple others including Pugsy from 2011 about Respiration Rate, central apneas, and Ballistocardiographic artifacts among other things. This is after the introduction of the S9 and the increased data availability that came with it. ResScan Software had been hacked to display Respiratory Rate. The link jumps into the middle of the thread. viewtopic/t61466/Central-Apneas-and-Res ... 45#p576919

Feel better, Pugsy
