Post by billybob02 » Sat Nov 18, 2006 11:23 am

Hi All,

Do a search on mouth taping. It seems to be the only sure way to NOT mouth breathe.

Thanks Brenda,
Just read about it, will look into it more.
I was curious about new dental appliences that are supposed to help with mouth breathing and tongue control.
Looking into it - basically to see if it works.

Or you could try the Hybrid or another full-face mask.
The Hybrid works for me. I tried taping, polygrip strips etc. and none of those worked for me. Though taping works for many people.

Chin straps pull jaw back and up

You want to pull your jaw out and down. Talk to your Dentist about
the SilentNite. It will solve your dry mouth problem. You can wear it
and still use your CPAP box.

If you mouth breathe a FF mask will keep you from losing treatment but your mouth will still dry out. Even with a HH it will dry out some.

if you are new to cpap, the dryness will pass, everyone gets it at one point or another. But if it persists and your leak rates are high it can mean you are mouth breathing.

Chin straps really don't work. tape can work and I used it for about a year, but that gets old after a while, a full face mask seems to work the best.

My suggestion: Tape for about a month then Somnotech will be out with their new Full Face mask, from what I've seen so far it looks pretty good. The only other full face I can recommend now is the UMFF, but that sucker is overpriced since they jacked up the price. The Comfort2 is noisy, uncomfortable, leaks and has lousy headgear clips, don't waste your money.

I've been using the Fisher & Paykel HC431 full face mask and it works great, the nice thing is it comes with 3 different sized cushions that all work with the same mask, so you can try them out and see which size works best.
I went with the FP HC 431 after considering it and the UMFF - the reviews I saw on the CPAP vendor websites were much more in favor of the FP HC431. I'm glad I did, this is the first mask I have found that's not only comfortable, but also I haven't had any problems with it, leakage or otherwise.
