Why bother with filter changes, I have a HEPA filter blower in my bedroom, fan blows at the intake of the CPAP. Filter never gets dirty. Once every two years is the replacement requirement for the HEPA machine. The benefit is, the old B&C also gets to breath clean air.

I like your idea of a larger .3 filter. Thought about something I could plug in / out of the machine but wondered if the smaller diameter tube I would need to plug into the blue silicone inlet tube on my AirSense 10 would restrict volume to any relevant degree.
Having the whole room scrubbed with your HEPA though is a great solution that does double duty. We have some air scrubbers left over from a renovation that ‘had’ some optional hepa filters in them but these units are large and fairly noisy.
I also have some .5 micron bags that I suppose I could just cut up, rubber band around the left side of the machine, and I wouldn’t have to change those for quite a long while. Food for thought - thanks.

No no, mr bitchy has *clearly* stated that he is concerned about not wanting the inside of his cpap to look like this:
Image
Yikes! If it stands any chance at getting anywhere near a 10th as dirty as that, then the person needs to consider they quite possibly live in the equivalent of a Tijuana muffler shop and should focus on cleaning their home. That filter is the least of their worries.
The whole hype by "apap" is based on his own ignorance... I've opened up cpaps that have been used for several years, and there's never been any buildup on the turbine.. the worst I've seen is a *very* light dusting on some of the sound deadening foam inside the air chamber.

Your filter should be changed *as needed*... so if it's still nice and white because it's not collecting anything... don't change it.

Hi Apap,

I realise this is a thread from 2 years ago, however just wondering if you ever managed to get an actual answer to your question instead of unhelpful and hateful comments?

I too am interested in finding some kind of larger uncut filter sheet to cut to size and use when replacing filters. Mainly to cut costs - considering the high price per unit for the filters?

Cheers in advance.

Most people hunting filter material would first know filters need to meet specs for their use. Using the wrong media can result in not meeting the needs of you or the equiptment. You have homework to do, then Google 3M. Jim

And if you are going to read old posts try reading them all your question would bee answered in the thread.

A dollar a year is "high cost"?

The amount Medicare allows for filters is many times the price at cpap.com for the SAME filters.
Something like the price difference between home brewed coffee vs $tarbux.
Cheap, possibly dangerous, vs the good stuff at the best price.

EDIT: Stub,

This discussion has already been had. We learned that the "fabric" is one of two types:
1. Single layered coarse like the one that comes with the machine. This one is apparently washable. It's also terrible at actually filtering dust. Probably only good at filtering out moths.
2. Multi-layered with 3-micron filtering, hypoallergenic. This one uses heat to weld/cut the edges of the fabric layers together, making a filter that fits perfectly in the machine.

Trying to find precision fabrics that work and cutting them to size is a useless exercise, given that you can buy the filters pre-cut and ready-to-use on Amazon for cheaper than the fabric, time and effort involved in making your own. For under $15, you can buy enough, replacing once a month, to use until your machine gives you the "motor life exceeded" message, meaning longer than the insurance-endowed life-expectancy of your machine.

It really is safer, more efficient and generally easier to just buy the hypoallergenic ones and replace them once a month.

Chris

And, what is *that*?

The life expectancy of the machine has nothing at all to do with the minimum interval between when Medicare, or any insurance company will buy another one.

In fact, I've heard that Medicare now won't automatically replace a machine after 5 years, because they last longer than that. (I might be wrong, I haven't tried).

At just under 18,000 hours and several months past five years,
my previous machine was still chugging away quietly, and without mishap.
Medicare replaced it without question.
Of course, your insurance/DME might behave differently.

I know, right?
It's more about how machine makers/designers add cues like "motor life exceeded" to their devices to ensnare patients into buying new machines because it fits what was, at the time, the Medicare 5-year review methodology. Medicare... Pffff... It could be so much better.

According to your wholly unsubstantiated *theory*, Chunkyfrog's machine, above, should have started complaining some 3400 hours ago. (5*365.25*8=14610).

Yet, she says it was still going strong.

My S9 VPAP Auto, 20167 hours, ... no message.

You have no idea what triggers that, or when.

Please stop talking like you know something about this.
