nostrils are sore

Post by sleeplessinNH » Fri Nov 17, 2006 7:35 am

Hi everyone,
So happy to have found this message board! I was diagnosed with sleep apnea a month ago and just got my machine 3 days ago. I used it the 1st 2 nights with no problem with the help of Ambien which the doctor prescribed to help me adjust. Last night I tried sleeping without the Ambien and for some reason I was very uncomfortable. I have a Resmed M series with Mirage (sorry If i spell this stuff wrong) nasal pillows. I found that I have to put the humidifier on 5 for the proper humidification.

My problem is that I woke up this morning with a sore right nostril. I am wondering if I am putting the canula in my nose too far or if the straps are too tight. On the other hand, I am worried that if I loosen the straps, I will have leaks when I move my head on the pillow. Has anyone else had this problem?
Carol

I'm still a wee newbie and I'm struggling with the same problem (sore nares). There are many recommendations on this board to use a nasal gel called Ayr. I picked some up last night and used it for the first time. My nose is still rough but I think it's better than before the gel.

Good luck!

....Others may use KY gel, chapstick, or anything with lots of lanolin oil, such as Bag Balm or its human clone.

Most need to use something, when starting out.

Thank you so much for your advice! I was thinking of using something like KY but I thought it would damage the integrity of the material used for the nasal plugs. I am definitely going to try it and get back to you on how I did.

Thanks again!

Since everyone else has given you good recommendations for the nares, I'll suggest that maybe your straps are too tight, or mask isn't fitting properly. I do not wear that type, so can't be more specific.

Carol,

If you have sores, I would use Neosporin type medicated cream during the day.

I agree with Gerald, the lanolin, is really good, I find it is think and does not come off. Also helps with the seal.

Like Offerocker mentioned check your straps.
