Oral Applaince

Post by Flasleep » Fri Nov 16, 2018 11:38 am

Switched from CPAP awhile back over to an oral appliance (SomonDent). Just had my followup sleep study (whilst using the oral appliance) and it's working great (AHI 2.0). Sleep Dr was very happy. If you can find a good dentist who does them, consider it.

That's great news. Glad it's working.

I'm curious to hear what your status was prior to starting with an oral appliance? moderate? medium? servere?

And what average AHI did you have when you were relying on a cpap machine?

I used an OA for almost a year (DreamTAP) and loved it. it took about two days to completely forget I was wearing it at night. My blood pressure went down and was managed using only two meds instead of four and my subjective symptoms were greatly improved. My initial study had shown me as mild with an AHI of 9.5. At my subsequent sleep study My AHI was 37 with a RERA count of 202 for the night. Sleep doctor said the second study was more accurate since I actually slept and they got me on my back more of the night.

They are moving me to CPAP with an upcoming titration study. I cannot speak too much since I have not tried CPAP yet, but my experience and based on what I have read from the CPAP users hear it convinces me that if given a chance for efficacious therapy I am going to pick the OA every time.

For those interested in the SomnoDent, here's a page with some interesting info and data:

(I haven't vetted this, but found the data on oximetry interesting. Basically stopped all significant desatting.
