Sneezing and blowing nose all day
Sneezing and blowing nose all day
How do you stop sneezing and blowing nose all day? I have my humidifier on 5 and have a heated hose. I use nasal mask. Pressure 10. Using saline nose spray. Using nasacort for headache caused by sinus polyp. Nose tingles all day.

Sneezing and nose blowing during the day doesn't affect CPAP use at night when you are sleeping...unless you mean during the night. In that case try a nasal rinse several times a day and a antihistamine.

Re: Sneezing and blowing nose all day
Let me claify, the CPAP machine is causing the sneezing, tingly nose, and runny nose during the day. I am using the saline spray many times throughout the day and I am do not want to have to take an antihistamine daily, especially one that causes drowsiness. I didnt have this problem before I started CPAP. This is the first day of week 3.

Re: Sneezing and blowing nose all day
There is NOTHING in the CPAP to cause your problem. It is just a blower. It takes your room air, filters it and runs it over clean distilled water, where you inhale it.

Re: Sneezing and blowing nose all day
Sorry to disagree. The CPAP could be causative. The increased airflow over the nasal sinuses may be stimulating a reaction. OP - discuss the situation with your doctor. I hope that your condition improves.

Re: Sneezing and blowing nose all day
I have the same problem. This morning I woke up with a pounding sinus headache. I too have the humidifier, heated hose, clean filters, plus an air cleaner going on in the bedroom. Is it just a coincidence? My start therapy date is 10/22 and my sinuses have been funky since I started. Too much humidity? Not enough?

Re: Sneezing and blowing nose all day
Have you tried a lower humidity setting than the 5?
Have you tried a higher humidity setting than the 5?
Sounds like you have what is called cpap rhintis (google it...it's a real issue)....your nasal mucosa doesn't like the humidity setting and when the nasal mucosa don't like something they react with the typical allergy attack symptoms. I get the same thing at a low humidity setting.
This is something that the individual has to sort out because humidity needs to keep the nasal mucosa happy are highly individualized.
One person may need near maximum humidity and the next person might need next to none added moisture...or any where in between.
Your setting of 5 is really sort of in the middle when using a heated hose. Maybe slightly higher than "in the middle".
You didn't mention which brand of machine which does make a slight difference. The 5 with heated hose isn't the necessarily the same depending on which brand. A ResMed setting of 5 isn't the same as a Respironics setting of 5 in terms of the amount of humidity delivered.
My suggestion...if you haven't tried a lower setting...try lower. If you have already tried lower and it didn't help or made things worse try higher.
And you may need to take some sort of oral medication short term because the nasal mucosa might take a few days to get back to normal and not be giving you that allergy attack reaction.
I had this happen to me when I tried a lower setting for one night...bad reaction that took 3 or 4 days for my nasal mucosa to return to normal..miserable 3 or 4 days. I know for sure it was the low setting because it happens also when I run out of water during the night when I forget to add water.

Re: Sneezing and blowing nose all day
I have dreamworks machine. Highest humidity setting is 5. I have tried 3,4 and 5 multiple times. Didn't try 1 or 2 because it seemed like my nose was sore inside on 3 and actually raised it in the middle of the night.. The soreness went away at 4. I did take antihistamine this morning, been a couple of hours now.. Not really working. Will call Dr tomorrow to see what he says.

Re: Sneezing and blowing nose all day
You may be like I was when it happened to me...took several days for the nasal mucosa to "heal up" and quit reacting negatively.
Especially since it has been going on for so long now. I took several days to heal up and that was with just one night at a setting my nose didn't like.
Talk to your doctor for sure and as much as I hate to say it...you may need to do without cpap for 2 or 3 nights and let the mucosa return to normal and then start again.

Re: Sneezing and blowing nose all day
When I sense the CPAP is causing sneezing or congestion I clean it. It has worked every time so far. An ENT I saw once years ago before CPAP told me to try using a Qtip and sterile ointment like bacitracin to coat the inside of my nasal passages when I was having allergy attacks. It helps. I have chronically swollen sinus so I use a lot of Benadryl too.
Re: Sneezing and blowing nose all day
I had similar in the beginning. Nose ran like a faucet for a few weeks, then stopped. Didn't matter what humidifier settings I used. I settled on less humidity is better and hoped that would ultimately help. After that bout in the beginning, it has never recurred. I hope your nose will behave as mine did!
I do have chronic year-round allergies that cause periodic, unpredictable congestion. I use Ocean spray in the can. I also have the Grossan Nasal Irrigator for really bad congestion (allergies or the rare cold).
