Melatoninm: I just found an easier way to get 0.3 mg.

Post by SelfSeeker » Mon Nov 13, 2006 12:55 pm

I have not been able to find anything but 3mg capsules or pills.

I have seen a solution.

I have tried dissolving the capsules, but the powder makes a suspension, since the powder does not dissolve in water.

Today I saw and bought strips of melatonin 3 mg. They are easier to cut up then the pills. They are made from Jameson.
I can do this, I will do this.

I don't know how your way is easier than swallowing the 3mg. tab and falling asleep.

If you want a smaller dose then look for it, when I asked this not too long ago there was all kinds of listings where you could get it even Wal-Mart had it.

But I use the 3mg. dose that is easy to find so I don't need to hunt for any.

there does seem to be reasoning for using the smaller dose, but to each their own...

anyway

for people who want the smaller amnt, cutting strips seems a great way to do it, do the strips taste ok?

I did find a brand with 300 micrograms. Is that .3 milligrams? I am metric challenged.

I don't know anything about this site for buying stuff, but its the only place so far I can find with 300mcg dose.

3milligrams is perfectly safe, i even use it for my border collie who has severe anxiety during thunderstorms- the vet told me i could give her up to 6mg daily and it would be perfectly safe and she only weighs 40lbs.

Melatonin safety

Post by GoofyUT » Mon Nov 13, 2006 4:11 pm

The safety of melatonin at the 3 mg. strength is unquestioned. the problem is that using that dosing for sleep may desensitize the body's melatonin receptors as some studies suggest. Therefore, the conventional wisdom nowadays is NOT to exceed a dosing of 300 MICROGRAMS (0.3 milligrams) at bed-time for the purposes of sleep. BTW, 300 mcg. tablets of melatonin are available under the Rexall label at Wal-Mart.

Melatonin is thought to be VERY neuro-protective so No, taking more than 300 mcg. probably ain't gonna hurt ya. But check with your doc.

I have been looking for 0.3mg. I have not found it anywhere. So any time I go into a pharmacy, Walmart or where ever I look for it. So far this has been the easiest to cut up. I have not taken any. I will try them tonight.
I can do this, I will do this.

Hey how did it go with the strips last night? How do they taste? I have them in mind for someone who can't swallow pils, but who's sleep cycle is pretty messed up. These seem promising, but taste would be an issue.

I spoke with my family doc about taking Melatonin and how I was playing around with dosages to see what ,if any affect they had on me.Been playing this game for several weeks (since the last big melatonin thread).
He has no opposition to me trying it out but cautioned me that because it is not controlled here in Canada or the United States it is a crap shoot as far as dosage size on the label vs. what is in the pill .The two options he gave me were to 1. Buy from a well respected BIG name company from the U.S.(a company with something to lose should they try to sell inferior product) or 2.order it online from Europe were it is a controlled medication with tightly regulated production tolerances.

I'm used to falling asleep right away, but, I have found it difficult since I started the treatment. After reading this thread I took Chuck's advice, Walked into Wallmart, went to the vitamin/supplement section and found both the 300mcg & 3mg bottles of "rexall" brand melatonin.

I grabbed the 300 mic bottle and I'm looking forward to trying it.

It just encourages them to sleep. I give my Jack Russell a half tab on 4th July or he goes nuts from fireworks. The other day, when mailman delivered my SomnoTech mask, I forgot about him being in the house and he came a running drop-kicked the Postman right in the chest, he thought he was getting attacked for sure but then I explained to him that is how my Jack Russell greets people.

I took 1 - 300mcg tablet about 1/2 hour before bed time and I must say I got to sleep right away. I would probably have slept through the night if it weren't for those *%^#@ mask leaks.
I'm glad I found this thread. I'm hoping this will help me along until I get accustomed to the therapy.

Thanks

JM
